Micky van de Ven and Jan Paul van Hecke are heading home after the Netherlands were defeated on penalties by Morocco in the World Cup last 32 in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
Both defenders started the game in Monterrey, Mexico as the Dutch withstood Morocco’s pressure before taking the lead through Cody Gakpo 18 minutes from time.
Morocco, though, grabbed a stoppage-time equaliser via Issa Diop and with the scores level at 1-1 after normal time and extra time, they triumphed 3-2 in the resulting penalty shootout.
JP completed the full match, while Micky was substituted on 86 minutes.
Morocco advance to face Canada in Houston on Saturday, with the Netherlands left to contemplate what might have been.
The elimination of Ronald Koeman’s side means we have eight players left in the tournament, with Lucas Bergvall’s Sweden next in action when they take on France on Tuesday night (10pm UK).
