Marcos Senesi got his first taste of World Cup action as he started in Argentina's 3-1 win over Jordan to maintain their flawless start to this summer's tournament.
Having already topped Group J, the holders named a much-changed side as ex-Spur Giovani Lo Celso marked his World Cup debut with a goal when he curled in a free-kick to put his nation in front on 19 minutes in Dallas.
Summer signing Marcos was then at the heart of the action for Argentina's second just after the half-hour mark. The centre-back was inadvertently kicked in the head as he bravely dived to nod the ball at goal just inside the six-yard box and, after the referee had been sent to the monitor, a penalty was awarded which Lautaro Martinez slammed home.
Jordan halved the deficit with a well-worked team move finished by Mousa Al Tamari 10 minutes into the second half before Lionel Messi came off the bench to restore the two-goal cushion and break another record in the process.
His low free-kick in the 80th minute was his sixth of this tournament already and a record-extending 19th World Cup goal and meant he is the first player to score in seven consecutive World Cup games.
Marcos played the full contest at Dallas Stadium on his fourth cap, with Cristian Romero an unused substitute, as the defending champions now move on to the knockout stages with debutants Cape Verde their opponents in the last 32 in Miami at 11pm UK on Friday 3 July.
