Rodrigo’s World Cup ends at the hands of Pedro’s Spain

Rodrigo Bentancur and Uruguay were eliminated from the World Cup after a 1-0 defeat to Pedro Porro’s Spain in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Uruguay needed a positive result in Guadalajara, Mexico to secure progression to the last 32 but suffered a 1-0 loss, leaving them third with only two points from their three games in Group H and heading home.

Rodrigo played the full 90 minutes for Uruguay, while Pedro was an unused substitute for Spain, who top the group with seven points from a possible nine.

The result also secured England’s progress to the knockout stages with a game to spare – the Three Lions, with Djed Spence among their ranks, know they will at least finish as one of the best third-placed sides ahead of their clash with Panama on Saturday night (10pm UK).

On Friday evening, Pape Matar Sarr’s Senegal kept alive their hopes of qualifying with a 5-0 victory over 10-man Iraq. Pape was an unused substitute in Toronto as his nation finished third in Group I with three points. They’ll now need to wait to see if that’s enough to make it into the last 32.
