Internationals – important win for Hojbjerg’s Denmark, despair for Wales duo

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Denmark survived a late scare to register a 1-0 home win over Northern Ireland and go top of their group in Euro 2024 qualifying on Friday night.

Leading through Jonas Wind, the hosts appeared to have conceded a late, late equaliser to Northern Ireland debutant Callum Marshall – only for the goal to be ruled out by VAR.

Pierre played the full 90 minutes as Denmark picked up three points to move to the top of Group H.

There was no such luck for Ben Davies and Joe Rodon, however, as their Wales side suffered a shock 4-2 home defeat at the hands of Armenia, leaving them third in Group D.

Both defenders started the game – Ben went on to complete the full 90, with Joe substituted after 67 minutes.

As previously reported, England captain Harry Kane scored his nation’s third goal of their 4-0 away win over Malta from the penalty spot as the Three Lions maintained their 100 per cent record in Group C. Harry, whose goal was his 50th competitive one for England, played for an hour before being withdrawn.

Troy Parrott’s Republic of Ireland are without a point after two games in Group B following their 2-1 away defeat against Greece on Friday. Troy was introduced as an 89th-minute substitute as Ireland sought a late goal, but it wasn’t to be.

Elsewhere on Friday, there was a clean sheet for Davinson Sanchez, whose Colombia side beat Iraq 1-0 in a friendly in Spain. Davinson played the full game.

Heung-Min Son, meanwhile, was an unused substitute for South Korea as they lost 1-0 at home to Peru in another friendly.

Young goalkeeper Josh Keeley was on the bench for Republic of Ireland Under-21s in their 2-2 friendly draw with Ukraine in Austria.
