5Q | Mikey Moore: “Playing in front of our fans, singing my name – it’s what you dream of”
It’s safe to say the Spurs family is loving watching Mikey Moore. He’s one of our own, and certainly being made to feel that way...
So impressive last time out in N17 in our final pre-season match against Hoffenheim, the Academy graduate lit the flame again against Charlton in our Carabao Cup second round tie on Wednesday evening.
Always probing, turning, twisting and looking to make things happen from the right, Mikey cut inside in the 41st minute and let rip with his left foot from 16 yards – his shot rifling into the roof of the net to break the deadlock.
It was just what the doctor ordered, as well, as four more goals followed against the well-drilled, in-form Championship side – Dom Solanke, Kevin Danso’s first for the club followed by another, and a stunning debut from new signing Sávio, before Sávio’s shot deflected in off Ben Davies for the final scoreline.
Mikey played across the front line as Roberto De Zerbi made his changes – every touch greeted with fans off their seats, and numerous choruses of ‘he’s one of our own’ bellowing out from the South Stand and around the stadium.
Mikey spoke to us afterwards – here’s what he had to say…
Q1 | Tell us about the goal, it must have been a nice moment, personally, and important to break the deadlock…
Mikey: “Yeah, it was a good moment to score in the game and obviously scoring in the stadium is always an unreal feeling. I thoroughly enjoyed it.”
Q2 | It was an important goal in the context of the game – Charlton looked a tough nut to crack…
Mikey: “Charlton were tough to play against for the first 35-40 minutes, but when you score, it changes their game plan, and they've got to go for it a bit more. That helped us in the long run of the game, and we obviously built on it really well.”
Q3 | You had a couple of chances at Brentford – how sweet was it to bounce back after a tough afternoon at the Gtech?
Mikey: “Yeah, 100% I should have scored over the weekend - one of the chances I had, probably two of them to be honest. It was a bit of a relief to score and get on the scoresheet for Tottenham again. It's what I enjoy doing and what you play for.”
Q4 | Ben Davies said he loves the way you try to get on the front foot, push opponents back, be creative…
Mikey: “I think that's about right. The first five minutes, to be honest, I wasn't good enough. I knew that myself and when I did score, it gave me a bit of confidence. I knew that if I kept going, I'd show good moments in the game when they got a bit more tired. I built a bit that confidence off the goal and you do need those little moments to build on.”
Q5 | What do you think about your relationship with the fans and playing in front of that South Stand, all singing ‘he’s one of our own’?
Mikey: “I know… it’s unreal when they’re all singing your name. It's what you play for and what I dreamed of as a little kid.”
