Spurs 5-1 Charlton | Every word of Roberto De Zerbi's post-match press conference
Roberto De Zerbi spoke to the media at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium after our 5-1 win against Charlton in the second round of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night.
Here's what he had to say...
It felt like a night where you needed goals and you got them - Solanke, Moore, Sávio - important for them to score as well...
Roberto: "Yes we need goals, we need to create chances to score. To become a top team, we need many things, but one of these many things is to score, to be stronger when we are attacking in the last 30 metres. We have to score, we have to shoot and make combinations. We have a lot of very good players and they have to make a big target, a big goal for them to score and increase the number of goals. There will be competition in every position of the pitch and I will put on the pitch the players with more goals and who are able to create more chances to score."
You saw how quickly the fans took to Sávio - was that the perfect introduction for him?
Roberto: "Yes, it is a perfect day for him. I think his biggest step, his biggest improvement is to increase the number of goals because with his qualities, he is one of the best wingers. But the best wingers score many goals. I spoke with him yesterday, two days ago. We put the goal on 10-12 goals because we need 10-12 goals from the wingers. Last season, I think we suffered too much. Also because the number of goals were not enough to compete for nothing more than that position."
How important was it for Mikey Moore to show what he can do as well?
Roberto: "It is important for him, it is important for us because he is our player from the academy and in this day we have to understand what the best solution is for him, for us, because I would like to keep him because he is young, but a good player, but we can’t make the wrong decision because he needs to play and put games inside of him. With Johan Lange and Vinai, we have to find the best solution."
Can I check on Micky van de Ven and Kevin Danso after they hit their heads during the game?
Roberto: "Nothing. It was a normal situation on the pitch, but nothing important."
How did it feel to finally have Mateus Fernandes start a competitive game for the club?
Roberto: "Mateus Fernandes is another talent, big talent. We are lucky because he can cover two positions on the pitch, like as a pivot or number 10. Anyway, he brings quality, he is dynamic and he fights on the pitch, because I think in the last season he was one of the best players in terms of regaining the ball, in the duel. He is important, like Gallagher, because we can't forget Gallagher. I think today Rodrigo Bentancur played very well. I think now he is very important for us. Unfortunately, he started the season later than the other players, but when Rodrigo Bentancur is fit, is available, is in the right physical condition, he is a different player, because his understanding is great. He is a different player."
Did we see more of the real Tottenham tonight, a bit closer to what you want the final version to be?
Roberto: "I think we have to see the real Tottenham game by game. We have to be consistent, we have to win games in a row - three, four, five, six. Like I said yesterday in the press conference, I think we have to change the mentality inside of us, speaking in the dressing room. Our perspective has to change, because we are working well, we have good players. Even in the last two seasons, we lost many games and we finished 17th position on the table. It doesn't matter for this season, this season is a new season, it's a different atmosphere I think, I hope, different players, different targets. I will push every day to keep the humility, to keep the eyes on the ball and not on other things, but anyway we can't come to the training ground without ambitions. I want players ambitious to win many games in a row, to build the new mentality, to build a different mentality. Then, I don't know when we arrive, what we will be able to achieve, we will see. But at the end, without the right mentality, we can't achieve anything, for sure."
Was the plan to rest Sandro Tonali?
Roberto: "Sandro was in a plan to work with Marco Senesi yesterday, very strong, to improve their physical condition. Sandro has to work to feel better in terms of physical condition, but Saturday he will play in the first XI, without problems."
When you look at the game tonight, what improvement are you most proud of, considering you want this team to improve?
Roberto: "The order on the pitch, but there are two different games. Compare the game in Brentford, different game, man to man, all duels on the pitch in Brentford. Today we controlled the game, we stayed 80% of the game, 90% of the game in their half of the pitch, we played with order. We can improve in the last third of the pitch with combinations, with attacking the space or one-to-one, for sure. We can be better in the finishing of the ball possession, but anyway, we kept very well the pitch, we moved the ball quickly, like I want, we scored. I'm sorry for the goal we conceded, because we have to, like I said, we have to change the habits, we have to be hungry for the goal we conceded. It can happen, but we have to work to close our goal every game, but there are two different games. Also in Brentford, we know very well how to play that type of game, because we are able to play man to man, we are able to play and to fight in the duels, we are able to keep the ball better than we did. We have the solution to attack the space more times than we did in Brentford. Two different games."
Can we get your reaction to drawing Liverpool away in the next round of the cup?
Roberto: "Great, it's a great game. If we want to win the competition, we want to win the games. Sometimes in this competition, it can happen to play already in the beginning of this competition against big, big teams. It's a great challenge for the players, for me, for our club. And we have to arrive at that game ready to play in our style, ready to play with personality, ready to play again, following the work we are doing on the training ground."
