Away Day Q&A | Brentford

First up, David Tan and Peter Weston from West Sussex, who we spoke to at Brentford on Saturday.

How long have you been a Spurs fan?

David: “Since I was 10 - I'm 72, so 62 years.”

Peter: “64 years.”

Why Spurs? What is your Spurs story?

David: “When I was a youngster, at the age of eight, I saw the team win the double when I was living in Cardiff and I just got hooked.”

Peter: “For me, it's probably my dad, Patrick, he was in the Army and when he came out of the Army, he started supporting Spurs. I started watching the football on the telly when I was about 12, so sort of stuck with it. My daughter supports Spurs as well.”

Tell us about your journey to the Gtech today…

David: “Actually, it wasn’t too bad. We started off at 11 o'clock, but I forgot my batteries (for his mobility scooter), so we had to go all the way from Haywards Heath to Horsham! We got here about two o’clock, just had a lovely lunch. It was about three hours to drive in.”

What is your first away day memory?

David: “It was Bradford City in the FA Cup (3 January, 1969) and I met Bill Nicholson. Yes, I met him on the pitch, a very nice man. In those days, you could run onto the pitch and meet all the players. I've met some players over the years! That one really stuck with me.”

Peter: “For me, I've always watched the matches on television, so it's not until I met Dave that he's been taking me. It'd be Liverpool, season before last, second leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final (6 February, 2025). Yeah – one to forget! Anyway, my first time at Anfield, it was something else.”

What’s your favourite away stadium?

David: “Anfield for me.”

Peter: “Yeah, same for me.”

What’s your favourite away kit over the years?

David: “I would say this one (the yellow third kit from last season).”

Peter: “My daughter bought me this one (green away kit, 2020/21).”

What is your most memorable away game?

David: “When I was 15, 16, I went to Molineux for the 1972 UEFA Cup Final (first leg) against Wolves, when Martin Chivers scored that goal (a 35-yard thunderbolt). I was there that night. It was amazing.”

Peter: “It’s slightly more difficult for me because I’ve only been going away more recently, so I’ll go for that Liverpool game, even though we lost, it was an event and something I won’t forget. We lost, but I don’t care, I was there at Anfield supporting my team.”

Which stadium that you’ve never been to would you like to visit?

David: “I'd like to go to the Bernabéu, Real Madrid. That would be a bit special.”

Peter: “For me, it's Newcastle. It's a way up there, but I've got relatives there, so it's something I'll probably get to do one day soon.”

Finally, what is it about following Spurs away? What makes it so special?

David: “The atmosphere. You’re part of the family. You meet so many people.”

Peter: “It’s similar for me, really. Although I haven't been coming for many years now, I've been coming with Dave for, how many years? 10 years? He got me back into being able to watch my team, and then he offered to take me to away games, and I told him, ‘If I can, I will’. There are so many people I've met, people he's met, and we're all friends. We're on a group chat on WhatsApp….”

David: “Yes, we've got our own little WhatsApp group, and we've got lovely friends from all over the country. It’s great.”
