Rehanne on Bristol City and team news

Spurs Women Head Coach Rehanne Skinner has underlined the importance of turning performances into points when Bristol City come to The Hive on Sunday (kick-off 2pm).

Last weekend’s goalless draw at Reading saw us take a deserved share of the spoils after a disappointing run of results during the month prior, where we competed well against several different opponents but were often left frustrated in front of goal.

For their own part, Bristol City have made a brave play to boost their survival hopes over the last few weeks and although they’re currently back on the bottom of the table on goal difference, a superb 3-2 win over Reading last week and a 1-1 draw at West Ham in their last away game has given them a fighting chance of staying up.

They also reached the Continental Cup Final, where they lost to Chelsea last weekend, before being undone by Manchester City 3-0 in midweek.

Rehanne expects to come up against a defiant Robins side, but is confident that we’ll be able to produce what it takes to claim victory. We’re currently eighth, seven points and five places ahead of our visitors, but also only five points off sixth-placed Brighton.

“Obviously Bristol City have had a good run of games and results, and they’re battling away in terms of their position, as is everybody at this moment in time,” said Rehanne.

“It’s close in that part of the table, so it’s at a point where we’ve all got to focus on getting points out of games – for us, it’s about continuing to develop that side of our performance and to go in and give a really good display of what we’re about. Obviously we want to get the three points coming out of the game.”

We’ve unfortunately been hit by injuries to several players in recent weeks, but after forward Rachel Williams returned off the bench at the Madejski Stadium last time out, Rehanne is optimistic that we’ll soon be able to welcome some more players back into the fold.

“Our squad is in a really upward movement in terms of getting people back on the pitch,” she explained. “There’s been some positive steps attached to that and we hope to be able to have some more of those players back sooner rather than later.

“We’re coming into the business end of the season and every game is a battle for points. It’s important that we keep creating chances and work on our ruthlessness to take those chances when they arise. The players have worked hard this week and the intensity has been high in training. We’re looking forward to Sunday’s game.”
