Ben & Rob's preview | the north London derby
It's that time again... N17 Live presenter Ben Haines and Club commentator Rob Daly continue the count down to another huge north London derby as we travel to the Emirates in the Premier League on Saturday (12.30pm).
The Premier League is back after the international break, we're the early kick-off, it's first against third, we're still unbeaten and beat Leicester City 6-2 last time out, anticipation levels are growing by the hour! Take it away, chaps!
Ben: "I think I've been to 10 away derbies, and seen us win once, in the League Cup in 2018. That was only time of those 10 where it's gone according to the script, because we had the better side, played to our potential and won 2-0. This game doesn't seem to play that way, ever! This one is fascinating, it's really tight, and difficult to work out who is in the ascendency. Arsenal, on average, have had more possession in games than us this season, and that does lend itself to the idea that they will try to take control of the ball, knowing, at any moment, if they get it wrong we could punish them."
Rob: "I've looked up those average possession stats, Ben, we're on 47.9% and Arsenal 55.8%. The thing I think will be interesting, tactically, will be the use of Granit Xhaka and how Spurs can exploit what Arsenal do with him. He's in a new role, still in a two-man midfield, but getting more touches in the opposition box and looking to link the play. You'd then see Kieran Tierney or Oleksandr Zinchenko fill in when Xhaka joins the attack. He's got more goals and assists combined than he's had in each of his last three seasons already, so an interesting tactical tweak there from Arsenal."
Rob: "That also got me thinking... is there a gap there to be exploited down that side in transition? Arsenal have done some good business and their season will be slightly different from Spurs because they're not in the UEFA Champions League and playing more of a second string in the Europa League, with the likes of Matt Turner, Marquinhos, Albert Sambi Lokonga and Rob Holding all playing. Their Premier League team will be consistent week in, week out, where we know Antonio Conte can't rotate to the same extent. I think it will be close. Think back to last season's derby in May, Arsenal had won at Chelsea, beaten Leeds, United, West Ham, they were in fine form, but they fell apart at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium."
Ben: "Defensively, Arsenal have been so much better, William Saliba, Gabriel and Aaron Ramsdale as the three through the spine of the defence have been impressive, quite calm on the ball. Tierney is a doubt, and that has an impact if they then play Ben White as a centre-back, right-back. Zinchenko has also been injured, so you then think does Xhaka have the same freedom? Thomas Partey has also been injured, so you don't then know what version of Arsenal we're going to see in midfield. I think we've been at our best when we've defended on the front foot, snapping into challenges. That could be crucial as well, because Arsenal have been so intricate in and around the box. I think we need to be aggressive."
