Rehanne's verdict: "It gives everyone confidence"
Head Coach Rehanne Skinner spoke about the confidence Sunday's 2-1 win against Leicester City Women will give to Spurs, saying it's a great way to calm the nerves at the start of a new season.
"I was really pleased with the result. To get three points in the first game of the season is obviously what we set out to achieve. It eases the nerves a little bit and gives everyone a bit of confidence, so it's a great way for us to start.
"Performance wise, I think it was very different in the first and second half. The positives are that we controlled possession and reaped the benefits from the way we carried on chipping away at Leicester in the first half to get ourselves in the lead.
"In the second half they tried to overload the midfield a little bit more and we needed to manage the shape and switch on and make good decisions with our out of possession shape so that we weren't getting run down centrally, which took a few minutes so they had a little bit more positive possession at that time.
"As always, defensively we're resolute and made it really difficult to be broken down. Everybody stayed switched on and I thought we managed the game exceptionally well to the end to see out the game for the points."
Ashleigh Neville and Drew Spence both scored excellent goals from long range during the first half - an attribute that Rehanne is delighted to have in the team's locker.
"Both of them, in terms of taking on the shooting opportunities, just a fantastic attitude to get those on target with the space that they had available," she said. "More so for Ash, who had lots of time and space. It's a fantastic technique and what a way to start the season!
"I'm really pleased for Drew because she's just joined the club and had her debut today and got a goal. It was a fantastic finish from her as well."
We were forced into an early change when Rosella Ayane had to come off in the 16th minute, and Rehanne said we'll find out more about the situation next week.
"She's on crutches just as a precaution and obviously we need to make sure she's looked after, which we'll do when we get to assess her properly. Hopefully we'll see how that evolves over the next couple of days."
Kyah Simon came on for Jess Naz with half an hour to go and Rehanne explained the tactical decision.
"There were different things we wanted to switch up a little bit about what we were doing," she said. "Celin Bizet Ildhusøy got her debut and Ellie Brazil came on because of the situation with Roz. It was really positive to get the new players on and tactically we had to try and stretch things a little bit more to make sure we're saw the game out."
Angharad James and Amy Turner also got their debuts, and Rehanne is delighted with how the new signings are settling in.
"We've seen a chunk of them today who have settled into the team very well and dictated things. The two midfielders are brand new and it's just a great start for us overall."
