Players learn World Cup opponents
Hugo Lloris and France will begin their defence of the World Cup in a group containing Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s Denmark.
Our players who represent participating nations in the tournament today discovered their opponents for the finals in Qatar later this year after the draw was conducted in Doha.
Hugo and Les Bleus, who won the trophy in 2018, have been placed into Group D along with Pierre’s Denmark, Tunisia and either UAE, Australia or Peru, while Harry Kane – Golden Boot winner in 2018 – will lead England into battle in Group B, where they could face Ben Davies and Joe Rodon’s Wales, Scotland or Ukraine, depending on who wins the outstanding European play-off matches in June.
Eric Dier and Harry Winks have also represented the Three Lions in previous years, as have Ryan Sessegnon, Oliver Skipp and Japhet Tanganga at Under-21 level, while Cameron Carter-Vickers, currently on loan at Celtic, remains eligible for the USA, who are in England’s group. On-loan Tanguy Ndombele, meanwhile, has previously been capped by France.
Another loanee, Pape Matar Sarr, could find himself up against Steven Bergwijn when Senegal and the Netherlands meet in Group A, while Heung-Min Son’s South Korea will come up against Rodrigo Bentancur’s Uruguay in Group H.
Cristian Romero and on-loan Giovani Lo Celso’s Argentina are in Group C, Sergio Reguilon and on-loan Bryan Gil will hope to earn a recall for Spain for their campaign in Group E while Brazil, for whom Emerson Royal and Lucas Moura have been capped, will contest Group G.
This year’s World Cup takes place between 21 November and 18 December.
