Romero, Lo Celso feature as Argentina march on but it's a rare defeat for Richy and Royal's Brazil
Cristian Romero and Gio Lo Celso played their part as Argentina made it four wins out of four in FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifying against Peru in the early hours of Tuesday.
Cuti earned his 26th from the start and was substituted early in the second half while playmaker Gio picked up cap number 46 off the bench on 78 minutes as Lionel Messi struck twice in the first half to secure a 2-0 win for the world champions in Lima.
That stretched Argentina's incredible unbeaten record to 25 matches in CONMEBOL qualifying campaigns - they've yet to concede a goal in this qualifying campaign - and they are already four points clear of Uruguay, Brazil and Venezuela.
Talking of Brazil, Richarlison came off the bench in first half added time for injured Neymar and Emerson Royal was an unused substitute as the Selecao lost 2-0 to Uruguay in Montevideo, with Darwin Nunez and Nicolas de la Cruz on target for the hosts. It was Brazil's first defeat in World Cup qualifying since 2015 - ending a run of 37 games unbeaten. That was Richy's 48th cap.
