Martha Thomas on Liverpool draw: “We feel we should have got three points”

Martha Thomas was frustrated to leave Prenton Park with only a point after we concede an injury-time goal in the draw with Liverpool on Sunday afternoon.

The Scotland international played a pivotal role in giving us the lead in the 71st minute, flicking the ball over Niamh Fahey before picking out Celin Bizet inside the box, her looping effort going over the goalkeeper and into the back of the net.

We had to chances to further extended our advantage, with Amanda Nilden striking the post as she was inches away from grabbing her first goal in Lilywhite, while Shuang Wang was denied by Rachael Law after advancing into the box.

Speaking in her post-match interview with SPURSPLAY, the 27-year-old highlighted the need to capitalise on those opportunities after the Reds went up the other end, and in the first minute of added time, grabbed the equaliser through Marie Hobinger.

“We want to see out games, we could have got three points,” Martha said. “We either need to put games to bed by either scoring another or make sure we close up shop and don’t concede so late on.

“We hit the post and had other opportunities, we just need to make better decision in the final third. We got people in better positions that have tap-ins and we are just not utilising that, but those things happen. We were fortunate to get the goal and also unfortunate to concede - that’s just football.

“A point is better than nothing, especially when you are playing a team that is on the same points as you, so we can’t be too disappointed but, of course, we feel we should have got three points.

“We are a tight-knit group, we know we can perform well but these are the games we need to be winning against opponents in a similar place in the table as us, that’s the only way we can climb up the table to where we want to be.”
