Toby Alderweireld, Mousa Dembélé, Jan Vertonghen, Heung-Min Son, Davinson Sanchez and Christian Eriksen have all been named in their countries’ final World Cup squads.
Toby, Mousa and Jan were named in Belgium’s provisional 28-man squad and all have made the final cut of 23 players for the Red Devils. Jan made his 100th international appearance in Saturday’s goalless draw with Portugal, exactly 11 years to the day since making his debut against the same opponents in a Euro 2008 qualifier. Toby and Mousa both earned their 75th caps at the weekend as well.
Belgium have friendlies against Egypt (6 June) and Costa Rica (11 June) before the tournament kicks-off in Russia. Roberto Martinez’s men meet Panama (18 June), Tunisia (23 June) and England (28 June) in Group G.
Defender Davinson made his ninth appearance for Colombia in Friday’s goalless draw with Egypt and the 21-year-old heads to his first international tournament to face Japan (19 June), Poland (24 June) and Senegal (28 June) in Group H.
In contrast, Christian will be participating in his third major tournament having represented Denmark since 2010. The 26-year-old went to his previous World Cup in that year aged just 18, played at UEFA Euro 2012, and now has 21 goals in 77 matches for his country. Åge Hareide’s side have their final friendly against Mexico on Saturday before they take on Peru (16 June), Australia (21 June) and France (26 June) in Group C.
Heung-Min Son’s selection was confirmed by South Korea on Saturday. The 25-year-old has scored 21 goals in 66 appearances for his country, who play their last friendly against Bolivia on Thursday before starting their World Cup campaign. South Korea are in Group F and will face Sweden (18 June), Mexico (23 June) and Germany (27 June).
Five Spurs players – Dele Alli, Eric Dier, Harry Kane, Danny Rose and Kieran Trippier – were named in England’s 23-man selection while France captain Hugo Lloris was included in their final squad last month.
That means a total of 12 of our players will represent their countries at the finals in Russia, which start on 14 June. Good luck to all involved!
