The lowdown on Liverpool (WSL) | Emilie Mwanza

We travel to Liverpool in our first away game of 2026 in the Barclays Women’s Super League on Sunday (11.55am UK).

With a trip to St Helens Stadium on the cards this weekend, we caught back up with Emilie Mwanza, the founder & Editor-In-Chief for BeyondThe90, to give us the lowdown on the Reds ahead of our clash…

It hasn’t been the season Liverpool would have hoped for so far, can you put your finger on their struggles, particularly in the first half of the season?

Emilie: “It’s no secret that Liverpool have struggled, especially early on in the season. After losing some key players in the summer and being plagued by injuries in the opening weeks, their squad felt paper thin at times. They had to play in all sorts of combinations and were settling into a new manager and system. It proved to be a tough challenge for them.

“At the start, Gareth Taylor’s possession-based approach meant they were holding the ball well against their opponents but, without a cutthroat attack, this wasn’t resulting in points on the board.”

Liverpool have earned three points in their last five WSL games, could this spark a turning point for Gareth Taylor’s side?

Emilie: “It was important the Reds picked up a point against West Ham recently, with the East London club sitting just one point above them. Their draw against London City Lionesses was also a brilliant result.

“Liverpool don’t make it easy for teams to play against them and, as soon as they find consistency in the final third, I think they could start to rack up the points. But if they’re going to claw their way to safety and avoid ending up in a relegation play off at the end of the season, it’s due time they register that first WSL win of the season.

“Of course, they’ve had more joy outside of the league and certainly didn’t struggle to create chances against London Bees in the FA Cup. Although Liverpool were always the heavy favourites in that game, perhaps the result can serve as the exact confidence boost needed to spark an upturn in form.”

It has been a very busy couple of weeks in the winter transfer window for Liverpool, what impact have the new signings made?

Emilie: “Taylor has admitted that despite showing real promise, Liverpool need to improve their consistency higher up the pitch. Their six new signings should help with this and it’s safe to say they’ve had a productive January.

“Denise O’Sullivan and Alice Bergstrom both netted against London Bees last weekend, as did Martha Thomas, although she’ll be unavailable this weekend against her parent club.

“On Monday, they announced another signing and Aurélie Csillag became the latest addition to their new-look forward line. These players should bring pace, physicality and fresh energy, and they could prove vital in the second half of the season.”

How do you think the game will pan out on Sunday?

Emilie: “It will definitely be an interesting contest. In the reverse fixture back in November, Liverpool looked strong when they visited Brisbane Road. Just a few weeks later they held Chelsea to a draw at St Helens Stadium which underlined their ability to compete against top teams.

“Despite their league position Liverpool haven’t backed down. Add their new signings into the mix and their gradually building confidence, and I think they could make it tough for Spurs on Sunday.”

Looking away from the game this weekend, how do Liverpool go about pushing themselves away from trouble?

Emilie: “No game in the WSL is easy, and Liverpool have a challenging run ahead. They face Manchester United, Aston Villa and Chelsea over the next few weeks. Momentum will be crucial. Turning solid performances into results, being more ruthless in front of goal, and making smart use of the depth added in January could make the difference.”
