Spurs vs Luton | Rob's tactical analysis, Ben's players to watch

Sat 30 March 2024, 09:30|Tottenham Hotspur

Club commentator, Rob Daly and Ben Haines, presenter of Inside Spurs, The Warm Up and Review shows, take a closer look at Luton ahead of this afternoon's Premier League clash at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (3pm UK).

Talking tactics with Rob

"Luton have changed their style somewhat in the last 12, 13 games. They've been a lot more gung-ho, braver on the ball, playing less 'longer' passes, playing through Ross Barkley more in one of the two holding positions, and it's led to some wild games - they beat Brighton 4-0, they were 4-2 up at Newcastle before drawing 4-4 and led at Anfield before losing 4-1 to Liverpool. There is a downside to this more cavalier approach, and that's that they do concede a lot of goals. They done that on the road of late. They were 3-0 up at Bournemouth at half-time recently and lost 4-3, so despite having an initial upturn in form, they are now eight without a win in the Premier League. It has to be said, a lot of that is down to injuries. They've so many players out. Teden Mengi being available is huge at centre-back, but two injuries are huge for Luton, Chiedozie Ogbene, who has been superb for the Republic of Ireland and proved himself as a Premier League player, is out for a few weeks after picking up a hamstring injury on international duty, and then Elijah Adebayo, who hit peak levels before picking up a thigh injury that's keeping him out - he's scored nine goals in 23 in the Premier League this season. So, massive losses for Luton. There was good news that Alfie Doughty, who has created an enormous amount of chances from the left, is fit after going off last time out against Forest. As for Spurs, I wonder if Ange Postecoglou might tweak things in midfield. At 3-0 down at Fulham, he made a triple change in there. Also, Richarlison is back after a knee injury, so that's an option and, of course, good news, Micky van de Ven is available. It's a tough game, Luton have made life difficult for just about everyone this season, particularly at Kenilworth Road, but I expect Spurs to cause Luton a lot of problems and I think we can expect goals on Saturday!"

Ben's players to watch

A bit of context... having watched all the players back in training over the course of the last couple of days it’s amazing how many of our group are representing their country all over the world - but there’s also been some really focussed time for players who have remained at Hotspur Way which could have an impact on the team that goes out to face Luton. With that in mind... my Spurs player to watch is Timo Werner. Having remained in north London over the international break he will have been putting in the hard yards to prepare for a big week ahead. He’s picked up a couple of goals and will be desperate to add to that tally at home against Luton. The wide left position both suits his game and ensures he will get chances thanks to that wonderful right to left and left to right pattern we create so often in the final third. His pace getting in behind but also his work rate make him a great option for Ange this weekend considering we know that Luton will come to N17 and be looking to play. On the flip side for Luton, I’ll pick out a couple here... I’ve been so so impressed with Ross Barkley. He has this amazing ability to receive the ball under pressure back to goal and wriggle himself into front facing positions where he can either drive forward or utilise his range of passing which is superb. Further forward Carlton Morris is really underrated player. If you look at the stats, a large Luton focus is creating opportunities to get crosses into the box - at 660, they have almost 80 more crosses then anyone else in the Premier League this season - and Morris is a really good hold up player but also a threat in the air that our back two will have to keep an eye on.
