Ange Postecoglou paid tribute to Pape Matar Sarr’s maturity in another eye-catching display from the midfielder in our 4-0 win at Villa on Sunday.

Pape typically covered every blade of grass in such a huge game at Villa Park and set us on our way with a magnificent cross dispatched by James Maddison for the opening goal on 50 minutes. Brennan Johnson soon made it 2-0 before goals from Heung-Min Son and Timo Werner capped an afternoon to remember in Birmingham.

All the more impressive was that Pape was booked after just 10 minutes of what was always going to be a high-tempo, potentially feisty encounter, yet the 21-year-old carried himself perfectly until he was replaced by Rodrigo Bentancur on 69 minutes.

For a young man, he’s very mature and the beauty of guys like that, and we’ve a few in our team, they’ve got such a high ceiling

Ange Postecoglou on Pape Matar Sarr

Asked about Pape on The Review Show, Ange told us: “He was brilliant, his energy… he’s got great quality, it was a great ball into Madders for the first goal, and that was an important goal.

“He always gives everything. I thought he was unlucky with the yellow card, to be honest, but, again, he handled himself well. For a young man, he’s very mature and the beauty of guys like that, and we’ve a few in our team, they’ve got such a high ceiling… in fact, they’ve probably got no ceiling to the kind of footballers they can be.”
