England heads brace in WSL draw at West Ham - on-the-whistle-report

West Ham United Women 2-2 Spurs Women

Sat 27 May 2023, 16:15|Tottenham Hotspur

Our Barclays Women's Super League campaign came to an end with a 2-2 draw away to West Ham United at Chigwell Construction Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Bethany England headed us into the lead, but the home side responded with an Emma Snerle equaliser.

On the brink of half-time, Snerle's cross went in off the head of Kit Graham, but we replied with another England header to equalise, her 13th goal in 14 games in all competitions for the Club.

Interim Head Coach Vicky Jepson made two changes to the side that began last weekend's 4-1 win against Reading, Asmita Ale Kit Graham replacing Kerys Harrop and Eveliina Summanen in the starting XI respectively.

West Ham had the lion's share of shots on goal in the game's opening exchanges, albeit primarily efforts from long range that Rebecca Spencer was able to deal with comfortably.

Our number 22 denied Vivianne Asseyi, who was looking lively up against Ale on the left wing, as well as Honoka Hayashi early on.

With 20 minutes played, Rosella Ayane floated the ball into the box for England to head back across goal and down into the bottom left corner for 1-0.

At the other end, Dagny Brynjarsdottir teed up Snerle, whose shot flew just wide of the top left corner from distance.

Chances were few and far between up until the 38th minute, when Snerle nicked the ball from Celin Bizet in the 18-yard box before curling it in off the far post to equalise.

With half-time approaching, a Snerle free-kick was then headed in courtesy of an attempted clearance by Graham and we went into the break behind.

At the start of the second half, Jepson made a double change, Harrop and Summanen coming on for Ale and James.

We began the period perfectly, Drew Spence and Graham both involved in the counter-attacking build-up before, once again, Ayane crossed from the left for England to head in for 2-2.

Jessica Naz came on for Bizet with just over half an hour remaining, and the former saw a shot deflected wide of the post as we looked to take the lead again.

With two assists to her name, Ayane was replaced by Mana Iwabuchi with 20 minutes to go.

Snerle then played the ball through to Brynjarsdottir and Amy Turner did really well to get back and time the block to keep the score level.

Looking for a hat-trick, England volleyed wide of the post on her left foot from the edge of the area, before Ashleigh Neville's effort met the same fate.

Kate Longhurst then fired over on the volley from long distance as she looked to sign off her career in style, having come on as a substitute for her final West Ham and WSL appearance.

Spencer made a brilliant save in the 83rd minute, pushing the ball over the bar from Lisa Evans' powerful, rising strike from the right.

We made one final change in the 87th minute, Ria Percival coming on for Graham.

Neither side were able to find the winning goal and the points were shared in East London, meaning we end the season ninth in the WSL.
