Late WSL defeat at Everton - on-the-whistle-report

Everton Women 2-1 Spurs Women

Sun 02 April 2023, 15:00|Tottenham Hotspur

We conceded late in stoppage time to lose 2-1 at Everton in the Women's Super League on Sunday afternoon. Eveliina Summanen scored the equalising goal after Nicoline Sorensen netted an opener early on, but Aggie Beever-Jones put Everton back in front in the 93rd minute.

Interim Head Coach Vicky Jepson made two changes to the side that began last weekend's north London derby, Rebecca Spencer and Mana Iwabuchi replacing Tinja-Riikka Korpela and Drew Spence.

Jessica Naz returned to the squad for the first time since December's game against Everton, having recovered from injury.

Kerys Harrop made her 178th appearance in the WSL, setting a new all-time record.

The home side took the lead early on, Izzy Christiansen putting the ball through to Sorensen in the 18-yard box, who curled it past Spencer for 1-0 with the first shot of the game.

Gabby George curled wide of the post from an Everton corner, but otherwise we responded well to going a goal down. Molly Bartrip picked out Bethany England on the left wing, who in turn pulled the ball back for Summanen. Connecting sweetly first-time, our Finnish forward picked out the bottom right corner with aplomb to equalise.

We almost scored another straight away as Summanen found a way through for Angharad James, but Courtney Brosnan was quick off of her line to close the angle and make the save.

In the 41st minute, James spotted Celin Bizet in space in the penalty area. She struck towards goal softly, but Brosnan allowed the ball to go between her legs before getting back to prevent it from crossing the line.

Everton had another couple of chances on the brink of half-time. Sorensen's cross reached George at the far post, but Ashleigh Neville was on hand to get an important block in. The following corner came out to Christiansen, who shot over the bar to wrap up the first half.

Early in the second half, Iwabuchi was replaced by Spence.

Neville's cross was met by England on the hour mark but the shot went straight at Brosnan, before Sorensen's free-kick was headed wide by George at the other end.

Spencer made an important save to keep the score level after Jess Park drifted in from the left wing to get a powerful shot away towards the bottom left corner. Our goalkeeper got down well to parry the ball around the post.

James saw a long-range effort go just over the bar with 13 minutes remaining, and Naz made her return to the side to replace Celin Bizet, before Nikola Karczewska came on for Ayane late on.

Elise Stevenik struck a free-kick straight at Spencer, before Beever-Jones picked out the bottom right corner for 2-1 in stoppage time.
