Spurs Women out of FA Cup on penalties - on-the-whistle-report

Spurs Women 0-0 Reading Women (4-5 on penalties)

Sun 26 February 2023, 16:00|Tottenham Hotspur

We were eliminated from the Vitality Women's FA Cup fifth round by Reading on Sunday. After extra-time, the score was 0-0, and the penalty shootout was won 5-4 by Reading.

Rehanne Skinner made two changes to the side that began our previous game against Manchester United, Angharad James and Nikola Karczewska replacing the suspended Eveliina Summanen and Bethany England. Kit Graham returned to the bench for the first time following her recovery from injury.

Rachel Rowe had the first chance of the game in the second minute, shooting to the bottom left corner from long range, but Tinja-Riikka Korpela got down to catch.

Our number one could have had an assist when her drop-kick went all the way up to Celin Bizet at the other end, the latter shifting the ball onto her right foot before curling straight at Grace Moloney.

Ashleigh Neville played a nice one-two with Bizet before shooting low and wide of the far post on her left foot as we broke forward again, before Maloney gathered the ball from a Karczewska header, as she flicked the ball on from Kerys Harrop's delivery.

Charlie Wellings shot straight at Korpela with power from the left wing, and on the other side Jade Moore tried her luck from distance, but our keeper demonstrated good reflexes to react.

Neville's cross from the right was headed toward goal by Drew Spence, with Moloney catching again, before the Reading goalkeeper came off of her line quickly to deny Bizet from getting a shot away, having been put through on goal by Neville.

Spence drifted in from the and struck wide of the post from long range before a ball into our 18-yard box was aimed at Wellings. She scooped it on target and Korpela was able to catch before the referee blew the whistle for half-time.

Rowe worked her way into the edge of the 18-yard box early in the second half and saw her shot blocked by Molly Bartrip.

At the other end, Spence put a good ball through to Karczewska, but again Moloney was quick off of her line to nullify the threat.

We made our first change in the 54th minute, Chioma Ubogagu coming on for Asmita Ale.

Neville made an important block to deny Reading finding the opener as the away side put a free-kick into the danger area as it remained goalless with 23 minutes remaining.

James created a good opportunity for Ubogagu to find the breakthrough, but she couldn't get the ball out of her feet and it went behind for a Reading goal kick.

Spence's cross from the left just evaded Bizet at the far post as we asserted more pressure, the noise building from the home supporters at Brisbane Road. Rowe struck over the bar from the edge of the area before we introduced Rosella Ayane in place of Mana Iwabuchi.

Ubogagu put a good ball in for Karczewska in the 90th minute. This time we got the shot away but once again Moloney narrowed the angle to make the save. Neville's cross was parried out to Spence moments later, and she volleyed wide.

With nothing to separate the two sides in 90 minutes, we went into extra-time.

Moloney denied Ayane from long range before Neville saw the ball fly wide of the far post after a one-two with Karczewska on the counter attack.

There was plenty for our supporters to cheer about in the 102nd minute, when Graham returned from injury to replace Karczewska. Graham almost made an instant impact, getting on the end of an Ayane cross before steering the ball just wide.

Wade had a couple of good chances but Korpela was equal to both in an end-to-end period of extra-time.

Bizet's ball into the box caused confusion for Reading before falling to Spence, who fired high over the bar.

Reading's goal kick was cut out by Spence late in the game before Ayane found Bizet in the danger area, whose shot was blocked.

It remained goalless after 120 minutes and we went to a penalty shootout. After Harrop hit the crossbar, Wade scored the deciding penalty for Reading.
