Summanen stars in WSL draw with Villa - on-the-whistle-report

Spurs Women 3-3 Aston Villa Women

Sun 23 April 2023, 16:00|Tottenham Hotspur

We came from 2-0 down to lead 3-2 in Sunday’s Women’s Super League encounter with Aston Villa thanks to an Eveliina Summanen double and a goal from Bethany England, but Rachel Daly scored late on to equalise.

Kirsty Hanson and Daly gave Aston Villa a 2-0 lead early on, but we responded as Summanen pulled one back with just under half an hour played. She added another before England put us ahead with 30 minutes to go. Daly got her second in the 84th minute from a Lucy Staniforth corner.

Interim Head Coach Vicky Jepson made two changes to the side that began our previous game against Everton, Rosella Ayane and Mana Iwabuchi making way for Asmita Ale and Drew Spence, with Ashleigh Neville moving further forward.

England nodded the ball into the path of Celin Bizet early in the first half, but she volleyed wide of the post.

Aston Villa took the lead at the other end moments later, Kenza Dali finding Hanson in the penalty area, who shot into the roof of the net.

The away side doubled their advantage in the 21st minute when a ball into the box was met by Daly, who converted past Rebecca Spencer.

We began to grow into the game as Molly Bartrip's free-kick was headed towards goal by Ashleigh Neville, but Hannah Hampton was equal to it.

Then, we did find the breakthrough, courtesy of a lovely through ball from England to Neville. She took the ball past Hampton and Summanen was in the right place at the right time to shoot into an open goal.

Summanen put a good ball into the box with half-time approaching, but no-one was at the far post to meet it.

Jordan Nobbs played the ball through to Hanson and this time her effort was saved by Spencer, before we went into the half-time break 2-1 down.

We equalised immediately after the break, Neville putting the ball into the box and Summanen smashing it in off the crossbar.

With half an hour to go, England made it 3-2 after some brilliant work on the right wing from Bizet to beat Mayumi Pacheco. The cross into the box found Neville, who brought it down for Angharad James. She poked it forward to England, who found the back of the net to give us the lead.

Alisha Lehmann had a good chance to pull one back after she was found in the box by Hanson, but shot wide of the post.

We did well to keep Villa quiet, not allowing another chance until the 82nd minute, when Pacheco volleyed wide from Dali's free-kick.

But the visitors found the equaliser when Staniforth's late corner was converted by Daly for 3-3.

Drew Spence curled just high and wide as six minutes were added on at the end of the second half, but neither side were able to find a winning goal.
