Spurs mark Brisbane Road debut with 1-0 win against Liverpool - on-the-whistle report

Tottenham Hotspur Women marked the first home game at Brisbane Road with a dominant display and a 1-0 win against Liverpool in the Women's Super League on Sunday afternoon.

Celin Bizet's early cross from the right wing led to a Niamh Fahey own goal, and we stood firm in the second half to earn our first clean sheet of the season.

Rehanne Skinner made two changes to the side that beat Reading 2-1 in the Continental League Cup prior to the international break, Tinja-Riika Korpela and Drew Spence coming in for Becky Spencer and So-hyun Cho.

Bizet fired over the bar from distance early on, before Ashleigh Neville drifted in from the left and curled a shot towards Rachel Laws' near post that was too soft to trouble the Liverpool keeper.

Spurs found the breakthrough in the 11th minute, Bizet's cross from the right wing hooked in at the near post via the attempted clearance of Reds captain Fahey.

We almost doubled our lead in style ten minutes later, Drew Spence crashing a powerful strike from long range onto the post.

Nikola Karczewska shot wide of the post and Neville had another good chance to make it two when she got on the receiving end of an accurate ball over the top from Angharad James. The former played a one-two with Karczewska before shooting against the crossbar.

Amy Turner dragged an effort wide of the post from just outside the 18-yard box on the brink of half-time and we went into the break ahead.

Spence headed softly at Laws early in the second half after a Bizet cross was flicked into her path by Asmita Ale.

Eveliina Summanen unleashed a powerful strike towards goal moments later, but again it was too central and Laws could catch comfortably.

Liverpool had one of their first sights at goal in the 59th minute, Yana Daniels cushioning a volley that Korpela was able to deal with.

Cho replaced James on the hour mark in our first change of the game and Liverpool substitute Ceri Holland worked her way into the penalty area before firing over from a narrow angle.

Bizet had a corner turned over the bar by Shelina Zadorsky before Liverpool then began to control more of the ball in our half.

But we weathered the storm and eventually made use of a stoppage in play to bring Ellie Brazil and Jessica Naz on for Karczewksa and Bizet respectively.

Late on, Molly Bartrip showed Katie Stengel down the right and, from a narrow angle, the Liverpool forward forced a good save from Korpela as five minutes were added on.
