Spurs put five past Coventry - Conti Cup report

Sun 27 November 2022, 16:00|Tottenham Hotspur

We made it six points from six in the FA Women's Continental League Cup group stages as we beat Coventry United 5-1 at Brisbane Road on Sunday afternoon.

Goals from Eveliina Summanen, Rosella Ayane and Kerys Harrop sent us into the break with a 3-0 lead, before Amy Turner headed in for four.

Coventry pulled one back in spectacular fashion from Francesca Orthodoxou late on, before Lenna Gunning-Williams marked her first appearance for us with a goal for 5-1.

Rehanne made four changes to the side that began last weekend's game against Chelsea, Kerys Harrop, Chioma Ubogagu, Rosella Ayane and Gracie Pearse (making her first start) replacing Shelina Zadorsky, Asmita Ale, Celin Bizet and Ashleigh Neville.

Academy trio Ella Houghton, Gunning-Williams and Kayleigh Stead were named on the bench for the first time.

We took the lead early on when Angharad James' corner was headed back across goal and into the bottom left corner by Summanen.

Ubogagu came in from the left to find Ayane in the 14th minute, and she tucked the ball past the near post for 2-0.

10 minutes later, Summanen floated a corner all the way to the far post, where Harrop was on hand to cushion it in on the left-footed volley.

Turner had a header deflected wide and Summanen curled a long-distance free-kick just past the bottom left corner, before shooting just wide of the far post from another James corner.

Tinja-Riikka Korpela got down to her right to deny Keeley Davies, who was attacking Simran Jhamat's cross, before Esther Morgan, on loan at Coventry, shot straight at our keeper.

At half-time, we replaced Drew Spence with So-hyun Cho, Korpela with Rebecca Spencer, and James made way for Ella Houghton to make her first-team debut.

The Academy midfielder tried her luck early in the second half, forcing Mia Smith to parry the ball around the post for a Spurs corner.

We gave the ball away and allowed Ebony Wiseman to shoot towards the bottom right, but Spencer was able to catch.

Pearse played a perfect ball through to Ayane midway through the second half, but the forward struck into the side netting.

Turner scored her first goal for Tottenham with a header with half an hour remaining, and Jessica Naz then fired wide before we replaced Ubogagu with Gunning-Williams and Ayane with Nikola Karczewska.

Pearse shot wide from long range and Naz darted into the area before seeing her shot gathered comfortably by Smith.

Coventry pulled one back in stoppage time with an impressive strike from long-range, Orthodoxou shooting into the top left corner.

But we made it 5-1 when Gunning-Williams got on the end of a ball into the box to head in for her first senior goal.
