Ben & Rob preview Leeds with special guest, Paul Robinson

Fri 11 November 2022, 17:00|Tottenham Hotspur

After 12 games in 40 days, the final hurdle of our mammoth stint before the World Cup sees us take on Leeds United at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday (3pm). With us every step of the way, N17 Live presenter Ben Haines and Club commentator Rob Daly and who better to join them than legendary Spurs, Leeds and England goalkeeper Paul Robinson!

120 appearances for Leeds, 1998-2004; 175 appearances for Spurs, 2004-2008

"A week and a half ago, I would have said this would have been a convincing win for Spurs. Leeds hadn't won in eight straight games and were in a poor run of form. I don't think anyone saw the result coming against Liverpool at Anfield (2-1 win, 29 October). That was an unbelievable win. Then against Bournemouth, another poor performance, but they managed to turn it around (3-1 down, won 4-3 last weekend). Now, Leeds come to Spurs with great momentum, an attacking style of play, but they remain fragile. They conceded three goals at home against Bournemouth, three at home against Fulham (lost 3-2, 23 October). Offensively, with the attacking prowess Spurs have in the squad, they can really hurt Leeds. Leeds play one way and will continue to do so, but I can see the likes of Kulusevski, his creativity, Richarlison's pace and strength and Harry Kane causing Leeds problems, because Leeds press high, they press in numbers. They play differently to how they played under Marcelo Bielsa, who went one on one all over the field, Jesse Marsch has them pressing in groups, in areas, all triggered by Brenden Aaronson, who has been excellent. Those two results have lifted Leeds up to mid-table but, in all honesty, you don't quite know which Leeds side will turn up."

"Forest... okay, it doesn't need saying how disappointing the defeat was. You could certainly see some of the fatigue in the players that Antonio Conte talked about. There were a few plus points ahead of Leeds - more minutes for Dejan Kulusevski, Richarlison's return, he looked bright when he came on, Djed Spence's cameo as well. Ultimately though, a disappointing result. On Leeds, I commentated on their recent loss at Leicester (2-0, 20 October) and I feared for Jesse Marsch on the back of that result, they just looked a bit flat. They have rallied and picked up some remarkable results, the win at Liverpool, the comeback from 3-1 down against Bournemouth. Players have come to the fore, like Crysencio Summerville, who impressed that day at Leicester, his first start in the Premier League, has scored in the last three games. Rodrigo is in great form, he's also scored in the last three games. I like Aaronson, he adds guile and skill, and they are very high energy. They are aggressive, like to get stuck in and it will be tough on Saturday. I wonder if Dejan Kulusevski will start, Richarlison as well after his re-appearance, maybe we'll see a switch back to 3-4-3 after playing 3-5-2 recently. Either way, the players will need to muster up all their energy, because Leeds will bring exactly that to N17."

Ben Haines

"It's been a strange season for Leeds. A couple of weeks ago, there was talk about them being in a crisis, but a couple of good results has got them out of that. You can see that two good results can throw you up the table. It was a brilliant late win against Liverpool, a game they got spot on, tactically. Then, a good comeback win against Bournemouth. That has eased the pressure. I guess they're in the same boat as us, in that one more good result before the break for the World Cup could have an enormous impact how their season is perceived. Leeds still have that ferocious mentality, and maybe that's why they still lose games, because they are quite open - and that's obviously something we need to take advantage of. Bottom line, we need to win this game. If we do, then if we sat down for a third-of-season analysis, then we're through to the knockout stage of the Champions League, and sitting there nicely in the top four, with the FA Cup to come. So, win this weekend, and we're in a brilliant position to pick up from when we return on Boxing Day."
