Obituary - Frank Smith

Wed 23 March 2022, 09:00|Tottenham Hotspur

We were sorry to hear of the recent passing of our former goalkeeper Frank Smith, who died on Wednesday 10 March, at the age of 85.

Born in Colchester in April 1936, Frank Anthony Smith started his career with local side Colchester Casuals before joining us an amateur in June 1953. He signed professional forms with us in February 1954 and spent the next eight years playing regularly for our Reserve and ‘A’ Teams. He was part of our Reserve side which won the Eastern Counties League on four occasions and the East Anglian Cup in 1958.

With opportunities to play first team football for Spurs limited, he signed for Queens Park Rangers in May 1962 and went on to make 66 Football League appearances before moving to Wimbledon in November 1965, featuring 165 times for the Dons. He retired in 1969 but was tempted out of retirement by Cheltenham Town and played three times in the Southern League for them in September/October that year.

A lifelong Spurs supporter, he will be sadly missed by his children Mark and Yvonne and seven loving grandchildren, who he had inspired until his very last day.

We would like to send our condolences to Frank’s family and friends at this sad time.
