Six strikes from Spurs players for England against Germany

Our players have certainly stepped up on England duty in crucial matches against Germany over the years - and as the rivals prepare to meet in the UEFA Nations League in Munich this evening (Tuesday, 7.45pm), we’ve listed six huge goals scored by our players against Die Mannschaft...

Alan Mullery/Martin Peters - England 2-3 West Germany - 14/06/1970

Just four years after scoring the biggest goal of his career - then a West Ham player - as England triumphed 4-2 in the 1966 World Cup Final, Martin Peters was at it again against West Germany in the World Cup - but this time it ended in despair. Peters had joined us in March, 1970, with Jimmy Greaves famously going the other way to Upton Park. He was joined on the scoresheet by Spurs team-mate Alan Mullery, who timed his first England goal to perfection to open the scoring after 32 minutes of this World Cup quarter-final in Estadio Leon, Mexico. Peters struck on 50 minutes and England looked set for the last four, but West Germany levelled with goals from Franz Beckenbauer (69) and Uwe Seeler (82) before Gerd Muller (108) won it in extra time.

Gary Lineker - England 1-1 West Germany - 04/07/1990

After tough times in the 1970s and 1980s, the renaissance of English football started here in World Cup Italia 90, spearheaded by two Spurs players, Paul Gascoigne and Gary Lineker. Gazza was the star of the tournament as England reached the semi-finals for the first time since 1966, Lineker scored four goals. Lineker’s final goal came 10 minutes from time of the semi-final against West Germany, a low drive with his left foot into the bottom corner to take the game into extra time in Turin. Lineker scored his spot-kick but Stuart Pearce and former Spur Chris Waddle missed as West Germany slotted home all four to go through to the final, where they would beat defending champions Argentina.

Harry Kane/Eric Dier - Germany 2-3 England - 26/03/2016

It had been 40 years since England had come from 2-0 down to win a match - against Italy in 1976 - and eight years since a win against Germany, including a 4-1 loss in the 2010 World Cup. That all changed on this March evening in Berlin, thanks to a huge Spurs influence at the Olympiastadion. Not that it looked likely. Toni Kroos (43) and Mario Gomez (57) put Germany 2-0 up and seemingly cruising before Harry Kane spun and lost two defenders before drilling into the bottom corner for 2-1 (61). Jamie Vardy backheeled home for 2-2 (74) before Eric Dier’s bullet header won it in injury time. That was Eric’s first international goal, Danny Rose won his first cap and four Spurs players started, including Dele and Harry.

Harry Kane - England 2-0 Germany - 29/06/2021

Now captain, here is one of Harry Kane’s proudest moments, leading out England in the last 16 of the European Championships at Wembley, and scoring late to secure a memorable victory against Germany. In front of 41,000 delirious fans as the world began to open up after COVID, this was a typically nervy, nip and tuck knockout game between the teams, both had chances, Jordan Pickford made key saves and it was in the balance until Raheem Sterling’s opener on 75 minutes. Ten minutes later, Harry sent the crowd into raptures, stooping to head home the second from Jack Grealish’s cross. England went on to reach the final, losing on penalties to Italy.
