Internationals - Sonny strikes again for South Korea

Fri 10 June 2022, 17:00|Tottenham Hotspur

Heung-Min Son has done it again for South Korea.

Just four days after celebrating his 100th cap for the Taegeuk Warriors with a free-kick against Chile, the forward repeated the trick to help his side claw their way back from a 2-0 deficit to gain a friendly draw against Paraguay on Friday.

Two goals from Newcastle's Miguel Almiron put Paraguay in control in Suwon's World Cup Stadium, but Sonny's goal - a free-kick curled into the top left corner from 25 yards - triggered South Korea's comeback, completed when Woo-young Jung of Al Sadd converted the equaliser from close range in the third minute of added time.

Our players have experienced mixed emotions on the international front over the last few days. On Friday evening, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (56 caps) played 90 minutes as Denmark suffered a 1-0 loss at home against Croatia in the UEFA Nations League. In the same competition, Hugo Lloris earned cap 139 as France needed a late equaliser from Kylian Mbappe to claim a 1-1 draw in Austria.

Ben Davies and Joe Rodon, fresh from helping Wales qualify for the World Cup for the first time in 64 years on Sunday, faced Spurs team-mate Steven Bergwijn as in-form Holland arrived at Cardiff City Stadium in the UEFA Nations League on Wednesday night. Ben (72 caps) and Joe (25) completed the 90 minutes again and it looked like Wales would grab a draw when Rhys Norrington-Davies equalised in the second minute of added time. It wasn't to be though as Wout Weghorst hit the winner two minutes later. Stevie came off the bench for cap number 19. Troy Parrott was an unused substitute as Republic of Ireland lost 1-0 against Ukraine in the UEFA Nations League.

On Thursday, Dejan Kulusevski wasn't involved as Sweden lost 1-0 against Serbia while Maksim Paskotsi started and played the full 90 as Estonia beat Malta 2-1 with a late goal in the UEFA Nations League. Kallum Cesay was an unused substitute as Sierra Leone lost 2-1 away to Nigeria in Africa Cup of Nations qualifying.
