Internationals – Scarlett and Devine win Under-19 Euros!

Sat 02 July 2022, 23:00|Tottenham Hotspur

Dane Scarlett and Alfie Devine are celebrating victory at the European Under-19 Championship with England.

The talented duo once again played an important role as the Young Lions rounded off a terrific tournament by beating Israel 3-1 after extra time in Friday night’s final in Slovakia.

Having already seen off the same opponents 1-0 in their third and final group game last weekend, England produced another strong performance to lift the trophy for the first time since 2017.

Oscar Gloukh had given Israel the lead shortly before half-time, but a second-half equaliser from Callum Doyle sent the game into extra time, where further goals from Carney Chukwuemeka and Aaron Ramsey sealed a famous win.

Midfielder Alfie and striker Dane both started the game, the former completing 85 minutes and the latter withdrawn during half-time in extra time.

Alfie featured in all five of England’s games at the tournament, starting four of those, with one goal and two assists to his name.

Dane made four starts, having been rested for the group game against Israel with England already assured of a place in the knockout stages, contributing two goals and one assist.

“As a Club, we’re extremely proud of Alfie and Dane for their achievements at the tournament,” said Academy Manager Dean Rastrick. “For both players to have gone away with England, played the way they have done and helped their country to win the trophy is superb – this is a significant moment in their young careers and we’re very pleased for them. Hopefully now they can use this experience to their advantage as they continue to work hard and develop going forward.”

Ryan Sessegnon, then of Fulham, was part of the Young Lions side that won the European Under-19 Championship five years ago, along with our former Academy midfielder Marcus Edwards.

By virtue of their performance at this summer’s tournament, England have also qualified for the upcoming FIFA Under-20 World Cup.

Congratulations, Dane and Alfie!
