Internationals - South American qualifiers, Pape into AFCON semi-finals

Sun 30 January 2022, 22:00|Tottenham Hotspur

It looks like Davinson Sanchez will have to put one over on Spurs team-mate Giovani Lo Celso on Tuesday to keep his and Colombia's World Cup dreams alive.

Davinson started and earned his 46th cap as Colombia slipped to a 1-0 defeat against Peru in the latest round of matches in South American qualifying for the tournament in Qatar later this year. Crucially, that meant Peru leapfrogged over Colombia into the top four automatic qualifying positions - with Uruguay also beating Paraguay to move into the play-off spot of fifth.

Next up for Davinson and Colombia is a trip to Argentina to face Gio's unbeaten La Albiceleste, a run they stretched to 14 matches out of the 18 in qualifying with a 2-1 win against Chile. Gio came off the bench in the 71st minute for cap number 37. Argentina sit second behind Brazil, having booked their place in Qatar in November.

Brazil are also unbeaten in qualifying, four points clear and on the plane to Qatar, but there was no celebrating for Emerson Royal, who was sent off after 20 minutes of the Seleção's 1-1 draw against Ecuador.

Good news on Sunday evening saw Pape Matar Sarr's Senegal beat Equatorial Guinea 3-1 to reach the semi-final of the Africa Cup of Nations. Pepe was an unused substitute. Senegal take on Burkino Faso in the last four on Wednesday. Hosts Cameroon face Egypt in the second semi-final on Thursday.
