Romero on permanent switch: “I’m ever so grateful to the Club”

Tue 30 August 2022, 21:30|Tottenham Hotspur

Cristian Romero is determined to continue to give his all in lilywhite as he aims to repay the trust placed in him by the Club after his loan move to north London was made permanent on Tuesday (30 August).

Having initially joined us in a temporary switch from Italian side Atalanta in the summer of 2021, Cristian has now agreed a deal with us that will run until 2027.

The permanent signing follows a fine campaign for the 24-year-old. Having arrived in N17 as the ‘Best Defender’ in Serie A for 2020/21, the all-action centre-back played a vital role in Antonio Conte’s back three last term as we finished fourth in the Premier League and secured a return to the UEFA Champions League.

“I'm very happy indeed,” he smiled as he expressed his delight at signing with us permanently. “It’s been a great bit of news over the past few days.

I’m ever so grateful to the Club for the trust placed upon me. I want to return this trust by working, training and giving my all to the Club.

“I’m ever so grateful to the Club for the trust placed upon me. I want to return this trust by working, training and giving my all to the Club. That’s the only thing that matters. This to me is non-negotiable. I believe I show this in every match, every time I wear the Spurs shirt.

Taking up position on the right-hand side of our back three, we have certainly seen that commitment to the cause from ‘Cuti’ in our colours so far with his passionate and assertive displays.

His role in the team is clearly something the defender has relished and his dynamic performances were a key part of what was a momentous first campaign in north London as we sealed a return to European football’s top table.

And, in having helped take us back into the Premier League’s top four, the Argentina international does not want to stop there with nights of Champions League football now on the horizon.

“Perhaps the highlight (of my time with the Club so far) would be the actual project that was presented to me, where I was going to play a particular role,” he explained.

“I decided to take the challenge. The goal was to be one of the top teams in the Premier League and to be part of that project was an achievement. I’m joyous for that great step forward we’ve taken.

“We want to be competing against the best teams in the best tournaments. The Premier League is the best league in the world. The Champions League is the best competition with all the best teams. We'll be there this year, competing, giving it our best to honour Tottenham. I believe that with the present squad we can reach the top.

“I believe that with the work the squad and the manager are carrying out, we are on the right path. We hope to keep this pace and reach the Champions League matches at an optimum level and reach the knock-out phases.”
