Hugo on Villa win: “After the storm, we took control”

Mon 11 April 2022, 14:45|Tottenham Hotspur

A typically humble Hugo Lloris praised the tenacity and togetherness of the team after we ran out 4-0 winners at Villa Park in the Premier League on Saturday evening.

Yet, despite that final scoreline, Hugo pushed hat-trick hero Heung-Min Son for Man of the Match honours. We took an early lead thanks to Sonny's opening strike, only for Villa to pile on the pressure for the rest of the first half. Hugo made seven saves in that half, the most a Spurs goalkeeper has made in the opening 45 since Opta started recording data in 2006.

"It was a busy first half!” Hugo told Spurs.TV. “But I enjoyed the moment with the team, because we suffered together. It was important to stay in the game. After the storm, we took control. We increased our levels and we hurt them every time we got the possibility.

“It was a little difficult to understand, because we started the game very well, we scored, but there were one or two incidents where the Villa players were quite aggressive, and they took the control, increased the intensity with the help of the crowd, and it was difficult for us to find a solution.

"At this moment, we tried to stay strong."

There are still seven games to play, many points to play for, so we cannot decrease the level, we need to continue to push until the end

We went on to dominate proceedings in the second half. Dejan Kulusevski doubled our advantage with a delightful left-footed finish into the bottom right corner, before Sonny went on to complete his hat-trick, with Harry and Deki providing the assists.

“We need to give credit to all of the players, because it was a tough battle, as we expected”, added the skipper. “We finished the game tired! We gave everything, even if it was the first time since Antonio Conte arrived that we conceded so many chances.  We also have to give credit to the Aston Villa players, because they created a lot, they were aggressive, direct into the box, very offensive.

"But we also feel at this moment in the season that we can score, we are very clinical, and that is something that we can keep until the end."
