'Unbelievable football, character... you need both' - Toby

Fri 05 March 2021, 15:45|Tottenham Hotspur

Two wins, two clean sheets and Toby Alderweireld has been delighted to see two sides of the team’s character this week.

The defender described our ‘unbelievable football’ to pull apart Burnley on Sunday, particularly in the first half of our 4-0 win. That form continued in the first half at Fulham on Thursday night, as we took an early lead through Dele's deflected effort - ruled as an own goal - and may well have extended that by half-time. It wasn't to be, however, and we were forced to dig in in the second half to preserve that 1-0 scoreline.

“We showed in the last two homes games (4-0 against Burnley and Wolfsberger AC) that we can play unbelievable football, and today we showed character,” Toby told us at Craven Cottage.

“You need to have both to get points in the Premier League and move us up the table. We have to take it game by game. I know it’s a cliché, but it’s the only way we can go up. Next up, a very important home game, another London derby (Palace on Sunday, 7.15pm), and we have to be ready. Everyone is fighting and getting confident and that’s very important.”

We needed three points and we said that in the dressing room, no matter what we do, three points, and that’s what we did

Toby was full of praise for Fulham, who had us on the back foot particularly at the start of the second half and had an equaliser chalked off by VAR. We finished strong though, created chances in the final quarter and saw home the three points.

He added: “You have to be honest and say we have to play better, but in the end, it’s an away game in the Premier League and it’s never going to be easy.

“We showed character. It’s easy to show that character when you are 3-0 up, but if you are 1-0 up, especially in the second half, when they just had the better of the game, that’s when we had to dig in and get the three points.”
