Spoils shared with Bristol City at the Hive

Spurs Women 1-1 Bristol City

Sun 21 March 2021, 16:30|Tottenham Hotspur

It was a game of missed chances as Spurs Women drew 1-1 with Bristol City in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League (WSL) at the Hive on Sunday afternoon.

Siri Worm’s outstanding third-minute free-kick was cancelled out by a second-half Gemma Evans header as the points were shared between the two sides.

Rehanne Skinner made two changes to the team that drew 0-0 at Reading last weekend with Becky Spencer returning from injury for Aurora Mikalsen in goal and Rianna Dean in place of Gemma Davison.

It was the perfect start for us when Dean won a free-kick on the edge of the penalty area and set-piece specialist Worm stepped up to curl in from 20 yards out.

We had a glorious chance to double our lead in the 16th minute when a well-worked throw-in between Worm, Rosella Ayane and Kit Graham was crossed by Graham and palmed out by Sophie Baggaley to the feet of Dean, but she was unable to steer her effort on target.

Graham then came close twice with attempts from outside the area. The first on her right foot went narrowly wide, before the second on her left clipped the post.

As the first half progressed we continued to create opportunities. Graham had the best chance to extend our lead when Ria Percival’s wide free-kick was flicked on by Alanna Kennedy at the front post and the midfielder’s header was cleared off the line.

Bristol City began the second half strongest with Ebony Salmon’s 25-yard volley hitting the post. They equalised in the 52nd minute when Evans climbed highest from an Ella Mastrantonio corner to convert.

Salmon had two opportunities to threaten our goal but some nice defending from Abbie McManus and, shortly after, Esther Morgan kept her at bay.

Our substitutes caused problems for Bristol City as Davison had a powerful effort from the edge of the box saved excellently by Baggaley while Rachel Williams also threatened after she raced through and beat Evans but couldn’t guide her effort on target.

We had two chances towards the end of the game as Worm’s whipped delivery was met by Williams at the back post but her header was saved by Baggaley before Kennedy connected with the resulting corner, only for the ball to be cleared off the line.

The point keeps us in eighth place ahead of the north London derby at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday (27 March) - kick-off is at 3.30pm and the match is available to watch live on our website, app and across our social channels.
