Bale: “Hopefully this is the start of something good”

Mon 01 March 2021, 15:52|Tottenham Hotspur

Gareth Bale believes we are beginning to see the best of both him and the team again after we returned to winning ways in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon with a 4-0 win over Burnley.

Within just 68 seconds of the first whistle, Gareth had us ahead at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium before he played in Harry Kane for our second on 15 minutes with a sumptuous raking pass. Lucas Moura then drove the ball home on the half-hour mark to make it three before Welshman Bale wrapped up the scoring on 55 minutes with a fine curling effort.

It might have been only the second victory in our last seven league outings, but our number nine believes the commanding nature of the performance against the Clarets, as well as our recent displays in Europe, is a clear sign that the squad is on the up – especially with us having scored at least four goals in four of our last six fixtures.

Meanwhile, with seven direct goal involvements in his last four games (four goals, three assists), the 31-year-old also feels momentum is building for him on a personal level.

I’m building, it’s taken a while but I’m happy, growing in confidence, my fitness is getting better, and I think you could see that in my performance.

“The team came out and played with confidence. We’ve used the Europa League to build that momentum and we showed today everyone was willing to work hard as a team - we stuck together, stuck to our game plan and it was great to get the victory,” the Welsh international smiled in his post-match interview.

“It was great for the team to start quickly - I think that built confidence and we grew into the game even more. We have the talent and the players to score lots of goals. It was nice to get four today as a team.

"The clean sheet was important again, so we (need to) keep building, keep growing in confidence and hopefully this is the start of something good now. In football, you don’t always get out what you put in, some performances have been really good, and we haven’t won, so, yes, it’s important to build on this game and look forward."

Reflecting on an individual basis, Gareth added: “I’m building, it’s taken a while but I’m happy, growing in confidence, my fitness is getting better, and I think you could see that in my performance.”
