My top three - Robbie Keane

Welcome to our summer series, 'my top three', where we'll speak to legends and fans about their top three Spurs moments or goals. First up, Robbie Keane...

Robbie Keane has quite a catalogue of Spurs goals to select from – 122 – and his top three are typical of the Keano we all remember, one a cheeky finish, one an instinctive curler from 25 yards and one straight from the street where he honed his skills as a youngster in Dublin.

The Republic of Ireland legend and all-time top goalscorer joined us from Leeds in 2002 and didn’t look back, top-scoring in his first season and striking up memorable partnerships with the likes of Teddy Sheringham, Mido, and, most notably, Dimitar Berbatov - 90 goals between them, 2006-2008 - in two spells between 2002-2011, racking up 306 appearances along the way.

Keano later had spells at West Ham, Villa and Celtic before taking the MLS by storm in 2012, one of the USA’s greatest soccer imports, with 104 goals in 164 games for LA Galaxy, where he won three MLS Cup. Most recently, he was back at Spurs as Jonathan Woodgate’s assistant last season, and he was also part of the Republic’s coaching team until Mick McCarthy’s departure last April.

3 - Spurs v Everton - 12.01.03

A special day for Robbie on 12 January 2003, his first hat-trick for Spurs, in what turned out to be the final time he played live in front of father, Robbie Snr, who sadly passed away in March that year. What a finish for his hat-trick as well, Robbie was calmness personified to just clip the ball over advancing Espen Baardsen to secure a 4-3 win at the Lane.

Robbie: “Goal number three was against Everton in January, 2003, my hat-trick goal that day. It was a special moment for me for personal reasons, as it was the last game my dad came to watch me play live. This one certainly holds a special place in my heart.”

2 - Spurs v Chelsea, 19.03.08

Robbie’s pings a beauty from 25 yards into the top corner in a 4-4 draw against title-chasing Chelsea at the Lane on 19 March, 2008 - less than a month after we’d beaten the Blues to lift the League Cup at Wembley.

Robbie: “My second goal choice is against Chelsea in the 4-4 draw at White Hart Lane, the equaliser in the last few minutes of the game. That was such a special moment. The atmosphere in the stadium that day was one of the best I ever witnessed.”

1 - Spurs v Blackburn, 05.03.06

Keano’s number one of 122 goals scored for Spurs once again came at the Lane, this time in a 3-2 win against Blackburn Rovers on 5 March 2006. Mido took a quick throw in the corner, Robbie describes the rest...

Robbie: “Number one was against Blackburn at White Hart Lane. Yes, it was a quick throw from Mido - he always talks about that assist - I chipped it over Robbie Savage’s head, the defender dived in and I pretended to shoot, cut inside, then ended up scoring. That’s my favourite goal for Spurs, another special one for me.”
