Internationals - France win group, controversy for Colombia

Thu 24 June 2021, 10:14|Tottenham Hotspur

Moussa Sissoko saw his first action of Euro 2020 as France drew 2-2 with Portugal in their final match in Group F on Wednesday evening.

The midfielder came on as an 87th-minute substitute while Hugo Lloris completed the full game as captain as usual, the result proving enough for Les Bleus to top their group and book a last-16 date with Switzerland in Bucharest on Monday.

France were already assured of a place in the knockout stages prior to kick-off, but it was still an all-action affair in Budapest.

Hugo was deemed to have fouled Danilo – somewhat harshly in some eyes – as he attempted to punch clear a cross, allowing Cristiano Ronaldo to give Portugal the lead from the penalty spot on the half-hour mark. Karim Benzema levelled with a spot-kick of his own just before the break, before making it 2-1 to France within two minutes of the restart. Ronaldo later scored a second penalty, while Germany’s 2-2 draw with Hungary in the group’s other game meant it was France (five points), Germany and Portugal (both four points) who progressed.

Midfielder Moussa replaced Antoine Griezmann as France saw out the closing stages against Portugal, meaning all of our players on duty at Euro 2020 have tasted match action, with everyone through to the knockout rounds.

In the early hours of Thursday morning, Davinson Sanchez played the full 90 minutes for Colombia as they suffered a controversial late loss to host nation Brazil at the Copa America.

Leading through an overhead kick from Luis Díaz, the Colombian players stopped play expecting a drop-ball with 12 minutes remaining after the ball hit the referee during a Brazil attack, but the match was allowed to continue and Roberto Firmino equalised. Colombia’s fierce protestations led to 10 added minutes at the end of the game and in the last of those, Casemiro headed home to give Brazil a 2-1 victory.

Davinson’s side have still qualified for the quarter-finals with four points from their four games. They await the identity of their opponents.
