Internationals – England progress as group winners

Tue 22 June 2021, 22:52|Tottenham Hotspur

Harry Kane captained England to a 1-0 victory over Czech Republic at Wembley in their third game of Euro 2020 on Tuesday night, sealing the Three Lions’ place at the top of Group D.

Already assured of qualification for the knockout stages going into the match, Gareth Southgate’s men started on the front foot and went ahead through Raheem Sterling’s 12th-minute header, before Harry saw a good chance well saved by Czech goalkeeper Tomas Vaclik.

England stayed in command throughout the rest of the contest to register a third consecutive clean sheet at the tournament and top their group with seven points from a possible nine. Croatia finished as runners-up with four points, ahead of Czech Republic on goal difference. Scotland were eliminated after a 3-1 loss to Croatia.

Harry completed his first full 90 minutes of the tournament while there was also once again a familiar Spurs man on the bench, our Academy’s Head of Coaching Chris Powell – who was interim assistant to Ryan Mason at the end of last season – undertaking his usual duties as part of Southgate’s England staff.

The Three Lions will be back at Wembley in the last 16 next Tuesday (29 June) to face the runners-up from Group F – either France, Germany, Portugal or Hungary.

Hugo Lloris and Moussa Sissoko are part of the France squad – they face Portugal on Wednesday evening (kick-off 8pm UK), with Germany facing Hungary at the same time.

Following Denmark’s win over Russia on Monday, all of our players at Euro 2020 are assured of a place in the next round.
