In just about every interview over the last 18 months, Heung-Min Son spoke about how he was missing our fans. For 63 of our last 67 competitive matches, Sonny and both teams stepped out to empty stadia, home and away.

That all changed on Sunday, as 58,262 fans packed into Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for our Premier League opener against Manchester City, the first time we've fully opened the gates since March, 2020. It was a carnival atmosphere and, as always, Sonny was the man for the occasion.

The South Korean superstar, who scored the first Premier League and Champions League goals at the stadium, delivered again, his seventh goal against City the decisive moment as we made it four wins out of four against Pep Guardiola’s men in our new home.

What a day - and Sonny felt every moment of it. “Did you see me before the game?” he beamed afterwards. “I was smiling when I saw all the flags. I just couldn’t believe it, they (the fans) are finally back!

“They give us so much positive energy, pushing us, and that’s what we miss and what we need, everyone together, fans, players, staff, everyone. That’s how I felt. If we have some bad games or bad results, it could happen, but we need you guys, supporting us so amazingly, and we will do our best on the pitch.

“I was so happy you guys are back in the stadium, really grateful, and the team did a great, great job. I really enjoyed it. Even though I was on the pitch, I was thinking, ‘look at this team’. I was like a fan of the players. Let’s keep pushing hard, all together.”

As for the win, and the performance, it was put to Sonny how every player was at 100 per cent -the only way to topple this City side, the reigning champions. “You need to be on it, otherwise you’ll get punished,” he added.

“The guys were, how can I say? Actually, I don’t need to say anything. I’m so grateful they were behind me, fighting, recovering the ball and gave me so many chances, I’m so grateful to have players like them, so proud.

“This result will give us so much of a positive boost, positive energy. Let’s push all together. The season is so long, and we need everyone, you guys, us, everyone together, pushing and let’s hope we can achieve some big things.”
