Yes, Hugo. We did know the answer...

After marking his record 300th Premier League appearance for the Club with a win at Wolves, and keeping his 106th clean sheet in the competition, it was put to the skipper that surely footballing life didn’t get much better...

“You know my answer already about 300 games!” he told us with a smile at Molineux. “The most important thing today is the win, the three points. We are still in the process, trying to get as much confidence as we can. We can feel we are growing up a team, and that’s a good feeling.”

Pressed further on his 300, Hugo, who joined us back in 2012 and now has 375 appearances under his belt in all competitions, added: “Yes, I’m really proud, but I’m not really looking at the numbers. I’m more focussed on the start of the season, to be honest, to make sure everyone is giving his best for the team.

“But, of course, I can be proud because when I signed, I couldn’t think that I would play 300 games in the Premier League for the club, so that’s a very good achievement, a personal achievement, but again there is still a lot to do ahead of me and I need to make sure I am ready to give my best for the team.”

So, back to the game, and Hugo was delighted with the commitment of the team to hold firm against a relentless Wolves side that simply kept coming. That translated into 25 attempts at goal from the home side, but only six on target - Hugo’s most decisive moment a one-on-one save when Adama Traore broke clean through the middle in the second half. In the end, Dele’s early penalty was enough for victory.

“Obviously, we suffered a lot against a very good opponent,” reflected Hugo. “This is a hard place to deal with, to be honest. We had chances to kill the game, they had a few chances to come back into the game, so we can be very pleased with the result and the team performance.

“Not with the ball, I think that’s an aspect of the game we can improve, but without the ball this is what we want to see, everyone committed, involved, making the runs, making the game hard for the opponent. That’s a good feeling. The confidence is coming back, but, in football, the balance can become very fragile if we’re not focused every day, so that’s the message.”
