Gareth Bale underlined the importance of our home form after securing victory against Brighton on Sunday.

The Welsh star came off the bench to deliver the knockout blow, heading home from Sergio Reguilon’s cross on 73 minutes. Harry Kane had opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the first half, Brighton levelled on 56 but we were back in the ascendency when Bale planted home the winner.

“It was a big win, especially as we haven’t won a game at home yet so far this season, so it was massively important to get that confidence at home, because the home form is going to be key this season,” he said.

“We’re delighted with the win, but we know there is a still lot of hard work ahead of us, so we’re not getting too carried away. The win shows the team is coming on, we’re learning from previous mistakes and we’ll keep learning, keep fighting and see where that takes us.”

It was great, but even more satisfying to see the game out, for it to be the winning goal and to get three points

What a moment for Gareth, the first goal of his second spell at Spurs, and his first since a trademark 30-yarder to beat Sunderland in the final match of his first spell in May, 2013.

How did that feel? “It was a bit relief, a lot of happiness,” he said. “From an individual point of view it was great but even more satisfying to see the game out, for it to be the winning goal and to get three points.

“It’s an incredible feeling personally, and you just wish the fans were here to celebrate. If that was the case, then... I can’t imagine that feeling. The most important thing is that I got the goal for the team and we got the three points.”

Two starts and two substitute appearances in, how did he feel? “I’m feeling good,” he explained. “I’m getting a lot fitter, obviously it’s been good to get a couple of starts in the Europa League, getting more minutes today will benefit me again.

“I’m staying patient, I know I have to build my match fitness, it’s been a while since I put a couple of games together, so I’ll continue to work hard in training every day, and in the games when I’m given the chance.”
