Legends | they dared to do...

Tue 24 March 2020, 14:56|Tottenham Hotspur

138 years and counting. That’s a lot of legends, and so many have graced our famous Lilywhite shirt since our Club was born in 1882.

Today, we launch a new section of our official website dedicated to those players we’ve loved down the years, players who thrilled us, players who had us all off our seats and players who, in many cases, dedicated most of their career to the mighty Spurs.

With profiles built in the same style as the current first team - including photographs and video, where possible - we’ll give a nod to those who laid the foundations for the Club we are today.

Bobby Buckle, for instance, one of our founders back in 1882, our first captain and known goalscorer; Sandy Brown, who scored in both the final and replay as we famously won the FA Cup for the first time – we're still the first non-league club to do so – back in 1901; Vivian Woodward, the ‘Harry Kane of his day’, top scorer in our first Football League campaign in 1908/09; Walter Tull, the first black outfield player to play at the highest level in this country, tragically killed in action at The Somme in 1918; Jimmy Dimmock, 438 appearances in 12 years at Spurs, FA Cup Final hero in 1921.

The contribution of all these players and more will be remembered.

Many of you will be familiar of our post-war history. Arthur Rowe’s ‘push and run’ team that won back-to-back titles, including our first Division One championship in 1950/51; Bill Nicholson’s all-conquering ‘double’ team and those ‘glory, glory’ days of the early 1960s, including an historic first European trophy; Bill’s cup winners of the early 1970s; Keith Burkinshaw taking us back into to the First Division after relegation and delivering trophies in the early 1980s, Ossie, Ricky, captain fantastic Steve Perryman.

Then we’re into the 1990s, Gazza, Gary Lineker and Gary Mabbutt, Klinsmann and Sheringham, David Ginola and to our modern-day history, League Cup success in 2008, King, Keane and Defoe, Berbatov, Modric, van der Vaart and Bale, Champions League qualification, right up to the present day, Lloris, Kane, Dele, Lucas' hat-trick and the Champions League Final.

The players who made us who we are will be recognised, over time, in this new legends section.

Today, we launch with modern greats:
Dimitar Berbatov
David Ginola
Robbie Keane
Ledley King
Rafa van der Vaart

Next up – look out for a vote coming soon on Twitter – and, eventually, we’ll have a go-to section of Spurs greats.

We hope you enjoy! COYS!
