Family is at the forefront of Toby Alderweireld’s mind as we continue to deal with the coronavirus.

Currently juggling virtual training sessions with the squad and staying fit at home with two young children in the Alderweireld household, Toby’s thoughts are also naturally turning to home, and his family in Belgium.

“It’s a strange feeling because I’m still in London, six, seven hours away from my family (in Belgium),” said Toby, born in Wilrijk, just outside Antwerp. “Even if I was there, I wouldn’t be able to see them, something we all have to deal with at the moment.

“I know my family is good, so I’m happy with that. It’s tough, as time goes on it’s been a while since I went to Belgium to see my parents and I want to help them, but I can’t. That feels... sometimes I’m a little angry about that, but who am I to be angry? There is nothing we can do about it.

“I wish I could do something for them, but everyone has their own problems, their own difficulties, and we all try to do the best we can.”

I hope everyone is okay. Everyone has to do the things we have to do now... the more we do this, the quicker we can go back to normal

As football remains on lockdown, Jose Mourinho and his coaching staff have been able to bring the players together using the latest technology and we’ve watched the squad train as one.

“You are still alone, but you are part of a team,” added Toby. “If you train together, maybe you do a little more than by yourself, so it’s nice to do it together and, of course, we have to keep going, to keep fit because you never know when we’ll need to play again. We have to be ready for that moment.

“In the meantime, this is the best way we can do it. We try to watch what we eat, do the things we need to do and then I try to help my wife and to be with my two kids. It’s a hard day’s work, believe me!

“We have a baby and a very small child. They keep me busy. I’m certainly not bored - our day goes so quickly, before we know we’re going to sleep again!

“I hope everyone is okay. Everyone has to do the things we have to do now… the more we do this, the quicker we can go back to normal. I know everyone is doing the best they can to help other people so I’m very positive about that.”
