'Too much emotion' - a first for Hugo in 'unique moment'

Thu 09 May 2019, 15:35|Tottenham Hotspur

Our captain, one of our longest-serving players, World Cup winner, Hugo Lloris has just about seen it all since making his senior debut for Nice in 2005. But in all the emotion at Ajax, there was even a first for him.

Approaching 600 career appearances - 296 for Spurs - Hugo ran the length of the pitch for a late corner as we hunted a late winner, that in itself a rarity, ran back but then found himself sprinting back again to join the celebrations when Lucas Moura completed the most miraculous of comebacks in the 96th minute to take us through to the Champions League Final.

“We were backs to the wall, no?” reflected Hugo at the Johan Cruyff ArenA. “We came from nowhere, to be honest. This is football.

“Maybe it’s the first time in my professional career I went up for a corner, the first time I’ve realised how long the pitch is! Then I went again to celebrate the goal and that was the first time in my career. I ran down the pitch because this moment is just unique and one of my favourites, for sure.

“It was too much emotion. I wanted to celebrate with my team-mates. We put so much passion into the second half. We came back from nowhere. This feeling is impossible to describe.”

It should not be forgotten that Hugo made a crucial save in the second minute of added time to deny Dusan Tadic and ultimately keep us in the competition. Four minutes later, Lucas struck to make history.

Lucas' hat-trick goal made it 3-2 on the night and 3-3 on aggregate as we progressed to the final on away goals having trailed 3-0 on aggregate at half-time. It’s the stuff footballing dreams are made of as we've made it to the final of Europe’s elite competition for the first time. We take on Liverpool in Madrid on 1 June.

“It’s one of my favourite moments since I’ve played for the Club - hopefully the best is ahead of us,” added Hugo, who is third on our all-time list of European appearance-makers on 53.

“We have to enjoy this moment. It is unique, especially the way the game ended. It’s fantastic. This is why we love football. We can have some thoughts for the Ajax players, for sure. It’s tough for them. It’s about details, football, especially at this level, and this is fantastic.

“I don’t want to talk about the final because we have so many weeks to prepare for this moment. It’s football. Never give up. Always give your best. It’s difficult to describe it now. We kept playing without thinking... the scenario is crazy, amazing.”
