Sterling scoops Premier League 2 award

Wed 06 February 2019, 12:00|Tottenham Hotspur

Kazaiah Sterling has won January’s Premier League 2 Player of the Month award.

The young forward, who last week headed out on loan to League One side Sunderland, enjoyed a productive month with our Under-23s, scoring in a 1-1 draw with Liverpool and following that up with the assist for Vincent Janssen’s equaliser a week later against West Ham United, as we again drew 1-1. He was unlucky not to get on the scoresheet himself in the latter contest, as he saw a penalty well saved by Hammers goalkeeper Joseph Anang.

At the end of January, he made his second competitive appearance for our first team in the 2-0 FA Cup defeat to Crystal Palace before signing on loan with the Black Cats on transfer deadline day, making his debut two days later in their 1-0 home win over AFC Wimbledon.

I was quite honoured just to be nominated because there are so many good players in the league.

Kazaiah becomes our second young player to be named Premier League 2 Player of the Month this season after Oliver Skipp received the accolade back in September.

“It’s a really good feeling to win the award,” the 20-year-old said. “I was quite honoured just to be nominated because there are so many good players in the league.

“Seeing young players, players that you've played with, progress to the first team and do well, it shows you what is possible if you do the right things and keep working hard."
