Jan Vertonghen felt the team drew on recent late wins against Fulham and Watford to repeat the feat against Newcastle on Saturday.

Heung-Min Son struck the decisive blow with the clock on 83 minutes at Wembley. That followed Harry Winks’ last-minute winner at Fulham and goals from Sonny and Fernando Llorente on 80 and 87 minutes respectively to topple Watford last week.

It means we’ve won 12 of our last 15 in the Premier League including those three late, late shows on the trot to sit third in the table after 25 games.

“We didn’t stop believing and the Fulham and Watford games helped us, keeping them in mind as we kept pushing,” said Jan. “This was a similar game as the other two and nine points from these three games is massive for us.

It’s our job to keep a clean sheet as well and we didn’t do that against Fulham and Watford and made it difficult for ourselves.

“From the start you could see what Newcastle were here for and to be fair, they do it well, like Watford, they did it well, Fulham did it well. It’s our job to keep a clean sheet as well and we didn’t do that against Fulham and Watford and made it difficult for ourselves.

“This time we defended well, they had a chance from (Salomon) Rondon’s header (hit the post) but apart from that we were the better team, had chances to score, left it late but it’s the same three points.”

There was also a mention for our central midfield axis of Harry Winks and Moussa Sissoko.

Jan added: “If you could see the way Winksy and Moussa were pressing in the second half, they were incredible. A big, big effort from them makes it easier for us. We kept believing. Fernando came on and again, he was important for us with an assist.”
