Chelsea take the points at the Bridge

Two second-half goals consigned us to defeat at Chelsea on Wednesday evening.

After a competitive first half that saw both sides hit the woodwork, our hard-working defence came undone on 57 minutes when Pedro left Toby Alderweireld in his wake and fired through the legs of Hugo Lloris.

From there, workmanlike Chelsea were happy to sit back and let us have the ball and, as we struggled to find much creativity against a packed defence, it was all over with one of those moments that the unfortunate Kieran Trippier won't forget quickly enough as a breakdown in communication with Lloris saw the right-back roll the ball into his own net for 2-0.

It means we've suffered back-to-back losses in the Premier League this week and with the teams around us all winning, a response will be needed in Saturday lunchtime's north London derby.

We weathered some early pressure from Chelsea but as the tackles began to fly in, we started to get onto the front foot. The Blues had been restricted to only the odd half-chance in the first 20 minutes with Gonzalo Higuain lashing a half-volley against the post early on before firing wide in a failed bid to capitalise on a poor clearance from Lloris.

At the other end, David Luiz was a constant obstacle, the Chelsea man diligently blocking efforts from Harry Winks and Erik Lamela with the chances beginning to come for us. Moussa Sissoko and Christian Eriksen were denied as we put the pressure on, although the off-side flag was up, while Harry Kane's effort was deflected behind as the energetic striker tried to take advantage of his own quickly-taken free-kick. Then, just before the break, we went closer still. Kane laid off to Winks whose long-range strike left goalkeeper Willy Caballero caught in the lights as it smashed off the crossbar, with shades of Eriksen's thunderbolt at the same time in the equivalent fixture last season.

Sadly, although Heung-Min Son still had time to spin away from Mateo Kovacic and fizz in a dangerous low cross from the right which Caballero had to claw away before the whistle, that was where any comparison to last year's visit to Stamford Bridge ended. We'd been deploying well-timed challenges all evening but when Pedro sped in down the right side, he turned away from Alderweireld and squeezed a shot under the vertically-planted Lloris to give the home side the upper hand.

We tried to fashion an equaliser but it proved tough against an organised Chelsea rearguard, Pedro tracking back to tackle Eriksen in the box before he could get a shot away and Kane guiding wide as Ben Davies' cut-back came to him awkwardly at speed. And any potential late rally was stamped out when Trippier and Lloris had a mix-up following Olivier Giroud's flick-on and the defender accidentally passed the ball into his own net six minutes from time.

Key moment

We'd been in the game and competing well for much of the first hour but when Pedro fired Chelsea ahead on 57 minutes, we never truly recovered.

Cutting in from the right, he managed to shake off the attentions of Alderweireld before beating Lloris from a tight angle.

Both the defender and goalkeeper will have been bitterly disappointed to have conceded the goal, Alderweireld going close twice at the other end as he sought to make amends, but with their noses in front, Chelsea kept us at arm's length to claim victory, with Trippier's late own goal only compounding our misery.

Mauricio's view

Manager Mauricio Pochettino admitted he didn't see enough from his players to mount a winning challenge on the night.

"Of course, it's difficult to win when you're not at your best," he said. "We didn't create enough chances. We were close, a lot of shots blocked but in the end we didn't get one shot on target and then it's impossible to win.

"It's always tough to play against Chelsea here at Stamford Bridge but we're very disappointed because in a few days it's two defeats. It's difficult to accept but we need to bounce back and try to be ready to compete on Saturday."
