Lucas: 'Games like this make us ready for the season'

Thu 01 August 2019, 14:20|Tottenham Hotspur

As he clutched the Audi Cup in Munich, Lucas Moura underlined how two wins in as many days against high-quality opponents have set us up nicely ahead of the start of the new season.

Hot on the heels of our 1-0 win over Real Madrid in Tuesday’s semi-final, we locked horns with German champions Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday evening, deservedly building up a 2-0 lead before being pegged back and ultimately winning on penalties.

Lucas was typically lively in attack as he played the second half against Madrid before putting in a 70-minute shift from the start against Munich and, with two more pre-season victories and the added bonus of a piece of silverware under his belt, he believes we’re on the right track heading into 2019/20.

“It’s very important to work hard in pre-season,” said the former PSG attacker. “Games like this make us ready for the season because the year will be very hard.

“It was two hard days, two hard games and I'm very happy to get my first trophy with Tottenham! That is my objective always – to be a champion – and we will work hard this season to have more trophies. I think we are doing a good job and are almost ready for the season.”

Before we get to the opening-day clash with Aston Villa on 10 August, we return home on Sunday for one final International Champions Cup match against Inter.

We’ve won one and lost one in that tournament so far this summer – a 3-2 victory over Juventus in Singapore followed up with a narrow 2-1 loss to Manchester United in Shanghai – and have seen some encouraging performances from senior and young players at the Club. The up-and-coming starlets impressed again in Germany this week, with Jack Roles, Oliver Skipp and Japhet Tanganga showing nerves of steel to score in the penalty shootout win over Bayern on their own ground.

“That's very important for us,” added Lucas, paying tribute to his young team-mates’ contributions. “They have a lot of quality and personality. I'm sure that they have a great future.”
