Bringing classic shirts back to life

Thu 13 September 2018, 11:22|Tottenham Hotspur

We’ve had some iconic kits throughout our history.

From numerous different takes on our classic Lilywhite home strip to some bold, colourful away designs, every fan has a favourite.

Some even associate shirts with games that stick out in their memories.

While our current squad makes use of our latest vibrant range of Nike kits in 2018/19 – available now via our online store – we’ve brought back some of the most iconic shirts from the past for you to wear with pride once again…

1986 home shirt

It’s one of the most recognisable kits in our history, worn by some of the most recognisable players.

So many top-level stars donned this Hummel shirt, first introduced in 1985, from midfield magician Glenn Hoddle as he came to the end of his Spurs career to striker Clive Allen as he plundered a club record 49 goals in all competitions during such a competitive 1986/87 season where we challenged for silverware on multiple fronts. Even Diego Maradona wore it when he turned out in Ossie Ardiles’ testimonial!

One game that immediately springs to mind whenever you see this shirt is the FA Cup semi-final of 1987, as we produced an excellent display to beat Watford 4-1 at the neutral venue of Villa Park and book our place in the showpiece final. Steve Hodge scored twice, with goals from Clive and Paul Allen sandwiched in between.

This iconic chevroned number, which wasn’t actually used in our 3-2 defeat to Coventry City in the final, is always remembered fondly and is one of the latest additions to our retro range.

1994 away shirt

Who doesn’t remember Jurgen Klinsmann in this famous shirt, theatrically diving in celebration after scoring on his Premier League debut?

A new signing from Monaco, manager Ossie Ardiles selected Klinsmann to start against Sheffield Wednesday in August, 1994, but as the striker walked out onto the Hillsborough pitch, he was met with a chorus of boos from the home fans.

With his collar flared, the German international would silence the home crowd in the only way he knew how. With a slender 3-2 lead over the Owls, Darren Anderton fired a cross towards the far post where an unmarked Klinsmann rose to extend our advantage. The goal wasn’t enough for him, however, as he ran over to the touchline before theatrically diving across the grass.

It was a moment that would go down in Premier League history and one that set the forward up for one of the best seasons of his career as he scored 29 goals over the course of that campaign, leading to him being named the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year.

1984 home shirt

It was one of the most famous White Hart Lane matches of all time.

Wind the clock back to May, 1984, as we took on Anderlecht in the second leg of the UEFA Cup Final wearing this iconic shirt.

After recording a 1-1 draw in the first leg, we brought the fight back to the Lane. Penalties loomed, though, as another 1-1 draw saw the tie finish 2-2 on aggregate. Graham Roberts ran up to smash the first penalty away before Anderlecht’s Morten Olsen saw his effort saved by 21-year-old goalkeeper Tony Parks.

Successful penalties from Mark Falco, Gary Stevens and Steve Archibald left Danny Thomas to take the decisive spot kick.

Unfortunately, the young full-back saw his strike saved. His world stood still, but a rousing cry of ‘There’s only one Danny Thomas’ lifted everyone on the pitch and was the prelude for Parks saving Arnor Gudjohnsen’s next kick to win the silverware for us.

Savour that UEFA Cup triumph with this classic shirt.

1961 home shirt

Our kit may have remained traditional but legendary manager Bill Nicholson revolutionised our game in our most successful season ever, as we became the first team of the modern era to win the fabled League and FA Cup Double in 1960/61.

With the opportunity to secure the Division One title against Sheffield Wednesday at the Lane in April, 1961, Danny Blanchflower, Dave Mackay, Bobby Smith and co. lined up in the tunnel wearing our white v-necked strip with the famous cockerel perched on the chest in a shield.

1961 home shirt

Goals from Smith and Les Allen gave us a 2-1 win – and we followed that up early the following month with a 2-0 triumph over Leicester City at Wembley to lift the FA Cup, thus completing the Double.

Smith and Terry Dyson scored that day – and now you can remember the very moment we clinched the Double with this 1961 FA Cup Final home shirt.

1991 home shirt

Gary Mabbutt, Gary Lineker and Paul Stewart are just some of the legends to have put this jersey over their shoulders and then covered it in champagne as we lifted our eighth FA Cup in 1991.

Taking on Nottingham Forest at Wembley, Stewart cancelled out Stuart Pearce’s opener before an extra-time own goal from Des Walker gave us a 2-1 triumph.

It was in the semi-final, however, where the 1991 side really demonstrated their skill and talent as we ran out 3-1 winners over rivals Arsenal. Paul Gascoigne, tragically carried off injured in the final, dazzled on the ball and gave us the lead through a free-kick that many will never forget – a 30-yard thunderbolt.

1991 home shirt

A defensive mix up then allowed goal machine Lineker to poke in before Alan Smith flicked a header in to bring the Gunners back into the game. It would be Lineker’s day, however, as a superb solo effort from the England international secured our place in the final.
