Eriksen: "We should have won, there is no other conclusion"

Thu 25 October 2018, 12:51|Tottenham Hotspur

Christian Eriksen couldn’t hide his frustration after a late equaliser cost us victory against PSV in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday night.

The Danish playmaker was instrumental as we turned around a 1-0 deficit in a match we dominated for long periods at the Philips Stadion in Eindhoven. He was involved in the move that led to Lucas Moura's equaliser on 39 minutes and provided an inch-perfect cross for Harry Kane to head home for 2-1 on 54 minutes.

Chances came and went for us to extend that lead - PSV goalkeeper Jeroen Zoet denied Christian and Harry, Erik Lamela hit the bar - before it all changed. Hugo Lloris was sent off after bringing down Hirving Lozano and with three minutes left on the clock, Luuk de Jong flicked home from close range for 2-2.

The result leaves us with one point from our first three matches in Group B with PSV (home, 6 November), Inter (home, 28 November) and Barcelona (away, 11 December) to follow.

We have to be professional and we have to win the next three games to have a chance of progressing

“If you watch the game we should have won, there is no other conclusion," said a dejected Christian at the Philips Stadion. “We should have finished the game off.

“We didn’t do that and PSV had the chance to come back. I gave a bad pass away, Hugo was sent off but again, if we finish the game off, we don’t have that at the end. We could have done better.

“We’ve played half of the games now and we have one point. Of course, it’s not what we wanted.

“Again, we have to be professional and we have to win the next three games to have a chance of progressing. We know it will be difficult but if we play like we did today, I think we’ll win a lot of games.”

While it was a disappointing night for the team, Christian’s first start since the Premier League win over Brighton in September was a positive note, with the midfielder feeling good to be back in the thick of the action.

“I felt confident going into the game,” he added.

“It finished with a bad last touch at the end, but I was happy to be back. It’s been a few weeks recovering and training and trying to get back to fitness, but I felt good."
