Harry Winks praised our substitutes for helping to turn the tide in Tuesday night’s Champions League win over PSV Eindhoven.

Trailing to Luuk de Jong’s early effort, Mauricio Pochettino rang the changes in the second half as Erik Lamela, Fernando Llorente and Kieran Trippier entered the fray for Lucas Moura, Heung-Min Son and Serge Aurier.

All three substitutes made their mark on the game as we pushed to get back on terms and it was Fernando who was crucial to our equaliser as he laid the ball off for fellow striker Harry Kane to fire past the impressive Jeroen Zoet 12 minutes from time.

The England striker then won us the game as he added his second in the final minute of normal time, but midfielder Winks believes those who came off the bench also deserve a share of the plaudits.

“Harry was brilliant, he led the line well but credit to Fernando as well when he came on, he was outstanding and he brought a different dimension to the team,” our number eight reflected.

“All the substitutes made an impact and the whole team was excellent. It was a tough victory to get but thankfully we’ve come away with the win.”

England midfielder Winksy impressed in the centre of the park again as he controlled the play and was at the heart of our comeback.

The 22-year-old admitted it was difficult test following the early setback of conceding but was impressed by the mentality shown by the team, as we pressed relentlessly for the eventual 2-1 win.

“It was a tough game, especially after conceding so early,” Harry explained. “We had to dig in and being our third game in six days, it was tough, but we deserved it.

“I thought we were excellent. Both goals were well deserved. It was backs to the wall defending for them probably from the second minute. They did have chances, but Paulo (Gazzaniga) made a couple of great saves, although we dominated possession and dominated the chances.

“The point in games like this is just to keep going for the 90 minutes and try to get the result. The minute you stop believing is the minute the other team wins. We had to keep believing, we knew we had the quality to get the goals back and we proved it again.”
